Today's Mighty Oak

A while ago, I was walking into the mall, and attached to an exit door of the movie theater was a small crocheted heart:

The project is an outreach program designed to bring awareness to bullying and suicide. From their website:

The hearts are placed in public places around the world for people to find during their everyday lives. We hope the hearts cause people to stop for a moment and reflect on a young life lost to suicide, on bullying and on the fact that everyone’s life matters. We want to leave people with a feeling that there is still good out there in the world

It’s a beautiful heart and a wonderful project (which has spread across the world as I learned).

While the heart I found wasn’t in bright, cheerful colors, as is requested, it did bring a smile to my face, not only for the fact of finding a wonderful piece of art, but it was in the bear pride flag colors (a subset in the gay community).

Small pieces of art like that are sadly seen by some as litter (and to be honest, sometimes I suppose they can be, we need to think about sustainability when creating art), but things like this always bring a smile to my face.

The smaller pieces of art at a Burn, or the things that people do or bring to gift to one another, very often, mean more I think than the large projects funded by grants. Both have their place, and spectacle is wonderful, but there is something to be said for the intimate moments of small art and their immediacy that is only experienced by a small handful of people. It’s an experience you can only share with a few others, and that adds a layer.

Either way though, it brought a smile to my face, and I’m so happy to have found this small heart!

Alright, let’s see what we have today. First up, in amazingness, a hotel clerk clapbacks at a racist customer trying to book a room.

In case you haven’t seen it, the trailer for the sequel to Breath of the Wild:

In Pride month news, an Alabama mayor defends his plan to kill queer people and a ‘death to gay’s pastor is going to hold a rally in Orlando because Pulse.

But in good news, the NYPD Commissioner has officially apologized for the raid on the Stonewall Inn.

Google has released a beautiful digital monument for the 50th anniversary called “Stonewall Forever,” preserving our history.

XKCD hits it out of the park. This. Absorb this:

And finally today, Mika announced a new album and he released the first single:

Alright, let’s see what we have today. Couple Game of Thrones things now that it’s ended. Did you, like everyone, want to see a buddy comedy spin off of Arya and the Hound (as well as Tormund and Jon Snow), here’s the 80’s sitcom opening.

And here’s the haunting rendition (By Florence + The Machine, in the show, it was Podrick that sang it) of Jenny of Oldstone from Game of Thrones:

And if you need some semblance of hope after a certain death, here’s the couple during happier times.

And finally in Game of Thrones, here’s one second from every episode.

A sloth, very slowly of course, thanks a human who helped him out.

The new trailer for the Downton Abbey movie looks awesome (although mostly just fan service, but I’m okay with that):

Good news: Philadelphia can exclude foster care agencies who don’t work with queer families.

Very bad news: The administration has unveiled their policy to allow medical providers to discriminate against queer patients.

And finally today, someone did some fancy refilming and editing of the lightsaber duel in Episode 4. Generally I like it!

Alright, let’s see what we have today. First up, the teaser for Star Wars, Episode IX is out:

Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series is headed to Numenor, and that’s a good thing!

Speaking of Tolkien, there is a new biopic coming out about the man, which I had no idea. The trailer looks good:

The far, far right has taken over Brazil, and they are systematically removing all LGBT references in school textbooks.

The author of The Frontrunner, where my running club gets its name, has died. She was just recently made the first honorary lifetime member by Frontrunners International.

That’s it for now, have a great one!

One of my recurring posts.  Happy Easter!

Alright, let’s see what we have today. First up, as part of the 50th anniversary celebration, the entirety of Stonewall has been 3D scanned, preserving the record of it.

I’ve been running a lot recently while listening to audio books, and before this news broke (even though the biography was published last year), I had started the biography of Mr. Rogers (as read by Lavar Burton, so just amazing all around), but he basically came out as bisexual!

The third season of Santa Clarita Diet is about to drop:

Young activists received a letter of apology from the governor of Utah. A great story, and hopefully it leads to a great outcome!

It’s higher than I thought, but still lower than it should be: the CDC reports that 35 percent of at-risk gay and bi men are on PrEP.

This is amazing: A woman recited (as much as she could in her three minutes) the Patton Oswalt filibuster from Parks and Rec! She even got to say “please allow me to finish.” These are civic engagement goals.

Speaking of civic engagement, one of the candidates running for the Democratic nomination, Pete Buttigieg, has impressed me so much, he makes me want to register with the party instead of being an Independent. I don’t have the link handy, but his interview on the Today show, talking about reclaiming faith for the left, was inspirational.

The massacre in New Zealand is of course, horrific. The outpouring of love, and hakas, has been emotional to say the least. It gives me hope (and makes me sad we can’t do it here), that tighter gun restrictions really can be done so quickly.

Also in super sad news, a survivor of Parkland has taken her own life.

In amazing karma, an anti-vaxxer in Italy…got chicken pox. Which is much worse if you’re an adult.

And finally, in funny news from the EU, France’s EU minister has named her cat Brexit: it cries to leave, but then never does.

Alright, let’s see what we have today. First up, Randy Rainbow is back with the Cell Block Tango:

The new president of Nintendo of America is named…Bowser.

A puppy gets emotional over the death of Mufasa in The Lion King.

Kim Davis must pay the victims of her bigotry, a court has ruled.

I had no idea there is a new biopic about JRR Tolkien coming out! See the trailer here.

Postmodern Jukebox takes on Pinky and the Brain.

And finally, the trailer from the Super Bowl for Avengers: Endgame:

All right, let’s see what we have today. First up, Billy Porter delivers the Queer State of the Union:

A great piece over at Pittsburgh Lesbian Corespondents about the fractions of the local community and how seemingly good causes can actually be a detriment. Also, a reminder that Jackie Evancho sang at the last inauguration: she and her family can be safe, but ignore the plights of other minority communities, and that’s not okay.

The situation is getting worse in Chechnya, and it continues to be horrifying.

Some happy news, a neat queer take on a favorite show of mine, Critical Role!

Why yes, Fox News, that is in fact what racism looks like. Your hosts.

Health and Human Services has granted a waiver to an adoption agency to discriminate because “Jesus.”

Brazil’s only gay member of Congress had to flee the country for his safety.

Can we please just be done with Bernie. Please?

USA Hockey has an great new trans and non-binary policy, they seem to always be out in front of the other major sports.

Related, why is the current administration obsessed with erasing trans people?

Alright, sorry for most of the sad and infuriating news. Only up from here, I hope!

Alright, let’s see what we have today. First up, these adorable parents who play a game of Mario Kart every morning to see who has to put on the kettle for their tea.

This dog responds to Harry Potter spells. Something to strive for in a pet!

A version of Fahrenheit 451 that can only be read when heat is applied to the pages.

Billy Porter is a treasure. He gives it to Kevin Hart and I’m all for it.

Christian Bale credits Satan for him being able to play Cheney. And it’s perfect.

Brazil elected their own far-right politician, and he spent his first day in power stripping rights from the queer community.

For something a bit lighter, here’s the Powerpoint presentation as to why Belle should have picked Gaston instead of the beast. Spoiler: The French Revolution.

The cast of The Magicians talks about their commitment to diversity, another reason to love that show!

Liberty Counsel, a hate group, is lobbying against an anti-lynching bill because it protects the queer community.

And in sweet, sweet hypocrisy, an anti-gay preacher wants you to know that he still hates gays, even though he was caught with sex workers.

Federal courts have blocked the horrific ‘citizenship’ question that was going to be added to the census.

The nominee for the next Attorney General ran HIV internment camps at Guantanamo.

In horrifying, saddening and infuriating news, the gay purge in Chechnya has resumed.

And after all of that horrible news, we need some comedy:

Here’s my yearly roundup of all the yearly wrap up videos. First up, YouTube Rewind. This may be the last year I include it. One, it’s not a great video, and two, I recognize less and less of these creators each year. My bits of Youtube aren’t represented (and that’s okay!).

Next up, DJ Earworm’s United State of Pop:

And here is Google’s year in search:

I’m working on putting together my 2018 year in review video, that will be up sometime soon!
