Today's Mighty Oak

I posted this thread over at UruObsession:

So…sit down everyone and listen to the story of my move in to college (for those moving into college for the first time this year, please do not be worried, the following account is under very special circumstances).

Today is Wednesday, August 17. The upperclassmen students move onto campus on Sunday, August 28. Being the editor of my school's newspaper, I move in early to get set up and put together a welcome back issue (hits the stands the first day of class).

I called my director of residence life, everything was good.
I called my advisor at the newspaper, everything was good.
I called my dean of students, everything was good.

And then, I turned on the news. You see, I go to Saint Vincent College. SVC hosts the training camp of the Pittsburgh Steelers. As such, it was just rated by Sports Illustrated as the number one "fan friendly" training camp. The Steelers had a very good year last year (except when Big Ben got to the playoffs, but I digress). To top if all off, the news reported that Ward, who was holding out was to return to camp this very day. Joy!

Many people think it is so cool that I go to the school where the Steeler's practice…often I smile and nod and attempt to change the subject
You see, as a student, it is horrible. The Steelers come onto campus for a month and a half and disrupt everything! They take over two dorms (one for them, one for press), a third building which is on constant reserve for ESPN and our student center (we get to keep a small portion of it). The fans are very rude and cannot respect the fact that we are taking classes over the summer, working and trying to live. Just to get back to my dorm I have to fight through crowds! The campus is constantly filled and there is no place to park. Half of our cafeteria is blocked off and the students receive less than adequate service there (including no more ice cream, and it's been super hot) and to top it all off the fans have this annoying habit of leaving their cigarette butts everywhere! (I really don't hate the Steelers or their fans, please don't get me wrong, everything is just such a hassle!).

Sooooooo….I wake up, get in the car and my parents and I come up to SVC and arrive at about 10 this morning.

I pull onto campus, get a parking pass (this will be important later) and park in front of Aurelius Hall, my home for the year.

I have to go pick up my key. I decide to go through Aurelius to see if my card works (we have to scan our student id to get into the dorms). Most of the buildings are connected at SVC so not a problem. Also, the first four floors of Aurelius are offices, the top three are dorms.

My card does not work. I go through some of the offices. I stop in at Safety and Security, and have them activate my card. They didn't know I was coming in today. Funny…:

After that I go to the post office. I don't have a key. Funny…:

I go to the office of student affairs. They don't know where my key is! They give me my roomates instead.

I head back to the car and then upstairs to my room.

They are putting new tile in. No way I can move in. Funny…:

So I go back to residence life. They try to hurry them along, they tell me my room will be ready by four o'clock. In the meantime we go to lunch. After that we meander around the bookstore trying to avoid the fans. We keep ourselves busy by doing some work in the newspaper office (although I can't do much as the internet port wasn't enabled and won't be for a few days…but I digress)

We go back to Aurelius to see what was up. They will have it ready by six o'clock. Wow, time just keeps wooshing by!

However, the manager of Facilities Management was there and he gave us special passes to go onto the field with the Steelers. We go to where all the fans are. We fight and fight our way through, getting elbowed and pushed, hit and smashed into. We get to the special gate…they aren't letting anyone else on today as practice is coming to a close…sigh.

We go back to my dorm to wait. Six o'clock comes and they aren't done (they then had to do the baseboard). However, they are done by about half past. After that, the cleaning lady comes in and does her thing (it takes her about an hour, just becasue she's slow and hates her job…but I digress).

My dad and I go down to our cars to get some stuff and start brining it in while she's finishing up (as it's 7:30) and we've been here since 10 this morning.

We have parking tickets on our cars!

We had passes.

We were moving in.

We were not even taking up regular spaces, we were in visitor spaces!

Now I am not happy about this…nor will I pay, student affairs will as they didn't have anything ready for me (and I saw my advisor and she agreed to this).

So we move all my stuff in, get it all situated, and 12 hours after I first arrived on campus I can sit down and write you all this story!

I hope you have enjoyed this story time with Mike!

Crazy day.

Quick update, I have to run: The website is back (at least the forums) and the scum of the earth dipshit dickhead is gone (not that we're bitter).

The rest of the site will be back soon.

I leave for SVC tomorrow.

I have to pack tonight.

We're going to watch "Noises Off!" tonight as well (very funny).

Last day at Westinghouse was good, sad but good.

Eh, other stuff, but not for now…

Well, acording to my last entry, looks like I shoudl go visit tmaster (not that I'm complaining one bit (:  ).

Things have been crazy, I was removed from the staff of the website that has been my home for years, even when I never felt like I had a real home, I could go there.

It happens though, I can't believe how everything happened.  I'll still be around, I have to finish up the game of Survivor (even though I'm in Spire Tribe…) and besides with EoA coming out, what's a guy to do (Oh…I know, get rid of tradition and trash the penguin pips….not that I'm bitter and angry…., I'm just saying things were better when we were all there).  I don't feel like I fit at MC either, I never did.  I'm trying to make a new home for myself over at Goldah's place, AngelStudios, and I even get to show off some of my creative work!

But anyway…one week left at Westinghouse.  I'm kind of sad, but kind of relieved.  I'm very tired of waking up at 6:30 each morning.  As much as I love working there, I'm ready to go back to school (already there is unnecessary drama surrounding The Review, but oh well…I just keep going and try to wade through all the shit).

The remote control car race to benefit United Way is Friday.  I'm excited, but also glad to have it done, it's been such a big project, and I know it's for a good cause, it's just a pain sometimes (mostly becasue the legal department needs to get off its high horse and people need to stop being so sue-happy).

I have six littles now!  I'm overwhelmed.  One is a commuter.  HELP!  I've never had a commuter before, what do I do?  Please leave comments if you have any ideas/suggestions!

The following was quoted on Slate

[QUOTE]Terrorists in Iraq are using dogs as suicide bombers. The Muslim Scholars Association says this is wrong because it hurts animals-but the Association sympathizes with the insurgents, who target human civilians.[/QUOTE]

(and yes I konw BBCode doesn't work here, just habit I suppose, hehehe)

Kind of sad and scary!

Wow…long post (which makes me feel like animan…hehehe, scary.

Talk with everyone soon!

Went to Borders today.  It's taken me two days to get halfway through Harry Potter Book 1.  So I picked up the next one.  Also got a cool book entitled "Suggestion."

I'm off to DC for a couple days for the ACP Student Media Conference.  I'll be back on Tuesday.

Have a great one!

So this is partially a note to myself and a note to anyone who may be reading this:

Someone (I can't remember who, hence, this entry) asked what one of the songs is in the movie, Remember the Titans.  The song is "Peace Train."  (during the scene when Julius goes over to have dinner).

If this was for you and you're reading this, leave me a comment to let me know.

(guess I'm still the king of weird music questions)

Hehehe, I love the quote above!

I went and saw the nerd this weekend, it was really good.

It was nice to be at school, and have pretty good weather (not too hot I thought). I really can't wait to get there, to be really busy again. Not that I'm not busy now, it's just that I have to go to bed fairly early becasue I have to wake up so early. I just want to be busy again and not have time to be still when my mind can wander and get me into trouble.

Does anyone know where I fit, becasue I don't feel like I fit anywhere (even at school, but it's better than Monroeville)?

Well the big news is that I got a car. It's a white, 2001 Pontiac Aztek. I like it a lot, I think it suits me well (being odd).

This also means I can get out of the house easier now!

Still confused and feeling like I don't fit in.

If anyone wants to do dinner sometime (if you're around Monroeville), let me know, we'll get together!

Well, the funny thing is that I got "tagged" by two people…

List five songs that you are currently digging. It doesn't matter what genre they are from, whether they have words or even if they're any good but they must be songs you're really enjoying right now. Post these instructions, along with each song's artist and title, in your blog. Then tag five other people to see what they're listening to.

1. You and Me – Lifehouse
2. Give me Novacaine – Green Day
3. Tchaikovsky – Barcarolle
4. Guster – Two Points for Honesty
5. The All American Rejects – The Last Song

I Tag:

1. Tim
2. Cat (cause everyone is doing it…)
3. Beth
4. Jimmy (probably won't see/do it, but I'll return your call soon, sorry I have'nt yet!)
5. Judd

And an obligatory quiz thingy that goes with the music motif of today's post:

Your Summer Anthem is Speed of Sound by Coldplay

All that noise, and all that sound,
All those places I got found.
And birds go flying at the speed of sound,
to show you how it all began.

You're out of your mind this summer, in a good way.
