Today's Mighty Oak

Alright, let’s see what we have going on today.  First up, of course, thoughts go out to Boston.  I was running tonight at the gym, and not that it did a bit of difference, but it was nice to run for them.

This capped off the week with the DOMA and Prop 8 cases, and of course, it’s always fun when there’s alcohol involved:

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

This judge is awesome: his cell phone went off during court, so he held himself in contempt and paid the fine.

Here are instructions for making a picnic table with a built in cooler, perfect for wine or beer for a picnic.  Awesome DIY project, and I can certainly think of certain family members/friends who would love this!

A good comic:

California is moving to remove tax-exempt status from charities that discriminate based on sexual orientation or religion, which would make the BSA councils pay tax.

The Church of England slowly moves forward, suggesting that they allow same-sex blessings.  Now, to be fair, the marriage equality legislation moving through Parliament specifically outlaws same-sex matrimony in the Church of England, and the Church says matrimony itself should only be between a man and a women, so they have some room to grow.  It’s weird having a state religion.

That’s it for now, but I’ll be back with more.

Let’s see what we have today, first up, it finally made it to an orchestra:

North Carolina Representative goes on a white supremist radio show.  There are just now words.  How awful.

The Voyageur Probe has been out in space for 35 years, amazing!

This has been floating around:

But also, the awesome followup:

“Our Care and Social Media teams are fully engaged to make sure he’s well tended to. On behalf of the many Trekkers and Sir Patrick Stewart fans across our company, I can assure you, we will make it so.”

Well this is just awkward and scary.

The Warhol foundation is set to auction of over 20,000 pieces.  They are expecting to bring in over $100 million.

So this is a real thing, gross:

Soon to be parents, take note of thisl

At the DNC, they had induction phone charging stations, although it also looks like they had a variety of cables as well:

And lastly, so this happened, although thankfully it missed us, although it did affect some things, due to the magnetic field:

That’s it for now, have a great one!

Mini update for everyone:

First up, amazing:

But I got scared when he was just holding it with his chin at the end!

I’ve never been a fan of the Susan G. Komen foundation, mostly due to their sue-happy nature (any other charity that has the audacity to use the phrase “for a cure” or apparently the color pink faces a lawsuit).  However, they recently dropped all funding for Planned Parenthood, a partnership which provided cancer screenings for women, all because one Republican in congress thinks their money goes to abortion.  So let’s recap, again, what all Planned Parenthood provides (women, men and families):

And finally, some brevity:

Quick update for everyone, let’s see what I have for you today:

Never covers a new study: and you should call your mom.

Kempt has rules for a pretty cool game to play when you go out to eat.  Although I don’t think it would really work with me and my friends.  We’re happy enough to not look at our phones.

Another follow up to the Shit Girls Say:

Another short post, have a great one!

Another fun update for everyone, hope you enjoy!

Amazing XKCD wedding cake:

XKCD web comic wedding cake

And some other cook cakes from Nerdist.

I’m not sure if this is somehow connected to the book about the Subway system, but there is an indy documentary about the font “Helvetica.”  I need to find a way to see this!

Lifehacker has a good article about how to protect you stuff.  I especially like the idea of setting up a fake porn folder with your contact and reward information on a flash drive.  Genius!  And here is their article about free apps, check it out.

This is scary, there are squid that can jump out of the water.

Hardcore Gaming, which is a strangely very static, web 1.0 type of site, ran an article a while back about Myst.  Check it out if you’re interested, and haven’t heard enough about it from me before.

Here’s a cool video about what if Mozilla made a cell phone:

Need to mix up your board games?  This book will help.

Here’s the projected timeline of the death of newspapers around the world.  We’ll see how this plays out.

And finally, a week without Facebook?  MSNBC tries it out.

Another update for everyone, but first some quick site news.  I tried installing an extension that will work with GoodReads, but so far, it has not worked yet.  I’ll keep working on it, see if I c an get it to work.  Also, Joomla 1.6 was just released, I’ll probably be upgrading sometime in the next month or so.  It will probably take me a little bit to get everything back to normal, so the site will probably be down for a weekend or so.

Would you like to play the first Super Mario Bros. as Link, or Samus, or Mega Man?  Check it out here.

Here’s some retro/cold war style video game posters, I like this one a lot:

Is there really an Olive Garden cooking school in Tuscany?  Click through to find out

Darth Vader had a couple bloopers when he recorded his voice for Tom Tom GPS:

The Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. is closed, but will reopen on February 1.  Can’t wait!

Cool, if gruesome ads from Copyranter about not talking on your cellphone as you drive, as well as ads for an independent film festival (also gross, but I find it kind of funny).  Copyranter also takes on the hypocrisy of plastic water bottles, and some awesome condom ads.

And finally, here’s some commentary about the wrappers at Burger King.

That’s it for now, but I should be back again soon with more, have a great one!
