Today's Mighty Oak

Everytime I watch Jon Stewart interview, I realize how much I miss him.

Yes, there’s of course some editing in this, for the format, and I’m sure for content and framing as well, but very few are as good as Stewart at tearing down the hypocrisy of the right.

Alright, let’s see what we have today. First up, the trailer for the Zombieland trailer:

The National Cathedral (which is Episcopalian, by the way), has called out the President’s racism as a clarion call to white supremacists.

Here’s the cast for the Wheel of Time series. And here’s a primer about the the book series.

The Obi-Wan Disney+ series is officially happening! And here’s the trailer for The Mandalorian:

Speaking of Star Wars, how about a lightsaber bionic arm? Yes please!

The trailer for the new series, The Dark Crystal: The Age of Resistance (and the primer for that as well):

This German town will give you money to prove it doesn’t exist.

The trailer for the new season of AHS looks awesome. Slasher summer camp meets the 1980s (seems to be very Stranger Things influenced).

Holy crap, the cast for this show looks amazing and I can’t wait to watch the insanity:

Mayor Pete gives an eloquent and great breakdown about a form of homophobia often encountered.

The administration is once again pushing, this time to SCOTUS, to allow anti-gay workplace discrimination to be legal. Oh, and anti-trans discrimination too.

Brace yourselves, Texas passed a law I agree with! Sending unsolicited nudes is now considered a form of sexual harassment in their legal code!

I guess kind of a good story: a bigoted wedding venue changed their mind about barring a marriage when they couldn’t actually find proof in the bible that interracial marriage was a sin. They still block gay weddings, but hey, it’s nice to hear that they took the time to read and come to the right conclusion.

Guys, guns are totally gay:

Okay, that’s it for now, have a great one!

Alright, let’s see what we have going on today.  First up, of course, thoughts go out to Boston.  I was running tonight at the gym, and not that it did a bit of difference, but it was nice to run for them.

This capped off the week with the DOMA and Prop 8 cases, and of course, it’s always fun when there’s alcohol involved:

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

This judge is awesome: his cell phone went off during court, so he held himself in contempt and paid the fine.

Here are instructions for making a picnic table with a built in cooler, perfect for wine or beer for a picnic.  Awesome DIY project, and I can certainly think of certain family members/friends who would love this!

A good comic:

California is moving to remove tax-exempt status from charities that discriminate based on sexual orientation or religion, which would make the BSA councils pay tax.

The Church of England slowly moves forward, suggesting that they allow same-sex blessings.  Now, to be fair, the marriage equality legislation moving through Parliament specifically outlaws same-sex matrimony in the Church of England, and the Church says matrimony itself should only be between a man and a women, so they have some room to grow.  It’s weird having a state religion.

That’s it for now, but I’ll be back with more.

Short update today.  First up, the big news here in Pittsburgh is Luke v. UPMC.  Ginny talks about it, and you should give it a read.

Sounds like something I came up with: replacing guns with thumbs up.

Chiptole has cancelled their sponsorship of a Scouting event in Utah because, you guessed it: the BSA discriminates against children.

And in a week, the arguments will take place at the Supreme Court against Prop 8 and DOMA.  It’s a big deal, and to help support it, a young man wrote a letter to Chief Justice Roberts, who has adoptive children:

That’s it for now, have a great one!

Alright, let’s see what we have today.  First up, Carbolic Smoke Ball hits it out of the park.

Guns and comic books, covered here by Gutters.

On “Gun Appreciation Day,” which, by the way, is horrid that it coincides with the MLK weekend, three different incidents of people being shot at gun shows.  But just be careful, the organization le pushing for this “appreciation day” are white supremicists.

A good piece on gun ownership, and how it scares me (I mean the author).  And in case you’re wondering about assault weapons, check out Australia.

The best creative confessions:

Deadspin wins the Internet on how to react to Donald Trump.  And gifs come in.

GOProud, the LGBT Republican organization has finally come out to support marriage equality.  You should reread that.  January 18, 2013.  They just not think that marriage equality is worth fighting for.  Anyway, GOProud is a laughable group, trying to trick people into thinking the GOP actually cares about citizens.  And now they’re outraged that they’ve become the laughing stock of the Internet.

Ancient riverbed discovered on Mars.  I just watched Star Talk on Nerdist where they talked about this!

That’s it for now, but I’ll be back with more soon, have a great one!

Alright, let’s see what we have.  An image heavy update, first up, for the kids from the 90s who will get this:

Fantastic xkcd comic here and here

So apparently you can simply walk to Mordor.

And from the lawyers:

A few misconceptions about guns.

And here is a fantastic quote from Ezra Klein:

“If roads were collapsing all across the United States, killing dozens of drivers, we would surely see that as a moment to talk about what we could do to keep roads from collapsing. If terrorists were detonating bombs in port after port, you can be sure Congress would be working to upgrade the nation’s security measures. If a plague was ripping through communities, public-health officials would be working feverishly to contain it.

“Only with gun violence do we respond to repeated tragedies by saying that mourning is acceptable but discussing how to prevent more tragedies is not. But that’s unacceptable. As others have observed, talking about how to stop mass shootings in the aftermath of a string of mass shootings isn’t too soon.’ It’s much too late.”

And even though it was hidden for a while, just remember, giving tax breaks to the wealthy doesn’t actually create jobs.  It just gives them lower taxes.

And finally, to make you feel better, 26 moments that will restore your faith in humanity.  It’s very touching.

Short entry, but I thought it warranted it’s own post.  Slog has a great post up about the safety of gun-ownership.  Check it out and check out all the studies that are linked.  If you take nothing else, please, please take a gun safety course and keep your guns and ammo locked up.  Too many people don’t.
