Everytime I watch Jon Stewart interview, I realize how much I miss him.
Yes, there’s of course some editing in this, for the format, and I’m sure for content and framing as well, but very few are as good as Stewart at tearing down the hypocrisy of the right.
I guess kind of a good story: a bigoted wedding venue changed their mind about barring a marriage when they couldn’t actually find proof in the bible that interracial marriage was a sin. They still block gay weddings, but hey, it’s nice to hear that they took the time to read and come to the right conclusion.
Alright, let’s see what we have going on today. First up, of course, thoughts go out to Boston. I was running tonight at the gym, and not that it did a bit of difference, but it was nice to run for them.
This capped off the week with the DOMA and Prop 8 cases, and of course, it’s always fun when there’s alcohol involved:
Here are instructions for making a picnic table with a built in cooler, perfect for wine or beer for a picnic. Awesome DIY project, and I can certainly think of certain family members/friends who would love this!
The Church of England slowly moves forward, suggesting that they allow same-sex blessings. Now, to be fair, the marriage equality legislation moving through Parliament specifically outlaws same-sex matrimony in the Church of England, and the Church says matrimony itself should only be between a man and a women, so they have some room to grow. It’s weird having a state religion.
And in a week, the arguments will take place at the Supreme Court against Prop 8 and DOMA. It’s a big deal, and to help support it, a young man wrote a letter to Chief Justice Roberts, who has adoptive children:
On “Gun Appreciation Day,” which, by the way, is horrid that it coincides with the MLK weekend, three different incidents of people being shot at gun shows. But just be careful, the organization le pushing for this “appreciation day” are white supremicists.
A good piece on gun ownership, and how it scares me (I mean the author). And in case you’re wondering about assault weapons, check out Australia.
Deadspin wins the Internet on how to react to Donald Trump. And gifs come in.
GOProud, the LGBT Republican organization has finally come out to support marriage equality. You should reread that. January 18, 2013. They just not think that marriage equality is worth fighting for. Anyway, GOProud is a laughable group, trying to trick people into thinking the GOP actually cares about citizens. And now they’re outraged that they’ve become the laughing stock of the Internet.
“If roads were collapsing all across the United States, killing dozens of drivers, we would surely see that as a moment to talk about what we could do to keep roads from collapsing. If terrorists were detonating bombs in port after port, you can be sure Congress would be working to upgrade the nation’s security measures. If a plague was ripping through communities, public-health officials would be working feverishly to contain it.
“Only with gun violence do we respond to repeated tragedies by saying that mourning is acceptable but discussing how to prevent more tragedies is not. But that’s unacceptable. As others have observed, talking about how to stop mass shootings in the aftermath of a string of mass shootings isn’t too soon.’ It’s much too late.”
And even though it was hidden for a while, just remember, giving tax breaks to the wealthy doesn’t actually create jobs. It just gives them lower taxes.
Short entry, but I thought it warranted it’s own post. Slog has a great post up about the safety of gun-ownership. Check it out and check out all the studies that are linked. If you take nothing else, please, please take a gun safety course and keep your guns and ammo locked up. Too many people don’t.
