Today's Mighty Oak

Alright, big update today, let’s see what we have.

So in outrageously offending news, the defense in the PA marriage equality trial are seeking the complete sexual history of those challenging the ban.  So no matter how bad your day has been, at least the state isn’t asking for all the details of your sex life to continue denying you your rights.  Sigh.

Awesome photo of a polar bear and a full moon.

A radio host, who is very popular in GOP circles, thinks that only property owners should be able to vote.  He stopped himself from adding ‘white male’ is my guess.

Want to see what it’s like to go ski jumping?  Of course you do:

The divorce rate of evangelicals is higher than the general population.  But even if you’re not and evangelical, if you live in a heavily-populated area, you have a bigger risk of getting divorced.

The rumor was that AHS was going to be subtitled “Circus” next season, but maybe not?

Remember the 14th Amendment?  The one that says we all should have equal rights?  Well, the OK attorney general says that it doesn’t apply to gay people.

If you haven’t seen the new Duracell commercial, you should:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2HD57z4F8E

As a reminder, when you operate a business, you can’t discriminate against a population.  If you set out a sign saying you would not serve African Americans, it’s the same as saying you won’t serve gays.  Not a hard concept (except when legal loopholes get involved). Or you can Arizona which is trying to make it legal to discriminate against the LGBT community because of religion.

I love the Muppets, even if they did get snubbed at the Golden Globes:

A great clip from Louisiana where a trans woman dared a bigoted city council member to put his money where his mouth was and stone her to death.  He recalled his bill moments later.

The Great Agency Adventure follows a copywriter working at 14 agencies in 14 months.  Sounds fun!

That’s it for now, have a great one everybody!

Alright, let’s see what we have today.  First up, the only way to present a puppy:

Lord of the Rings tarot cards, pretty awesome artwork!

There will be a fantasy league for the puppy bowl this year.  Yes, you did read that correctly.

A little late for this year (unless you celebrate Orthodox Christmas), but this is well done:

The Onion takes on hell.  And it’s fabulous take-over.

How big is the moon?  This big.

How a choir of “silent monks” did to celebrate Christmas.

A son’s Christmas gift to his dad:

An alternate ending to Harry Potter, very well done, actually.

How Libertarians have failed the country on gay rights.

When Thomas Kinkade and Star Wars mix.  Pretty awesome!

That’s it for now, have a great one everybody!

Alright, let’s see what we have today.  First up, it turns out that intelligent people drink more.

In case you forgot, Rick Santorum is an idiot.  Like, there aren’t enough words to decry this man.

If lawyers were copywriters.  It’s sad, by the way.

And for fans of “Orange is the New Black”

The beginning of the year-end round-ups (I’ll have a special post later, still waiting for one more video to be released), but here are 45 of the most powerful images of the year.

A man went an entire day (with one slip-up) by only saying “Hodor.

Research has proven that anti-LGBT legislation causes harm, especially on young people.

And sadly, speaking of, a prominent Russian actor was applauded when he said he wants to burn all gay men alive.

The final book in The Magicians trilogy comes out in August, and we have a cover.

That’s it for today, have a great one!

Alright let’s see what we have today. First up, I’m really hoping I can figure out a way to go see this, but here is the first poster of NPH as Hedwig.

A huge chart of beer. Freaking huge.

Chris Christie, Governor of NJ, is a giant asshole.  He’s on the record stating that if one of his kids was gay, he would tell them they had no right to get married.  No, I take that back, he’s not an asshole, he’s a fucking monster.

A medal was struck to commemorate Pope Francis’s first year and it quotes Lesus. Yep, they misspelled Jesus.

In case you forgot, Pat Robertson is a raging, evil asshole.  And Ccn we all just agree that Pat Robertson is just really reaching for ratings at this point?

In case you missed it, Firefly is coming back as a comic!

My favorite Halloween costume:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkBDRUO8hAo

On Jupiter and Saturn, it rains diamonds.

I’m not sure what’s going on with Vogue UK, but if you put in the Konami code, you see a raptor.  Seriously.

This is such a tragic and sad story.  Get the Kleenex ready.

A new kind of horror movie:

Also in the spirit of Halloween, living with Jigsaw.

Jessica Chobot is coming back to the Internet, this time on The Nerdist!

A statistic that will shock no one with a brain: when funding for mental health goes down, suicides go up.

The big Disney songs from our childhood:

The headline is a bit ridiculous, but still not cool.  But of course, it’s Fox News, so it shouldn’t surprise anyone.

I’ve never really trusted the ads using Google autocomplete, only because it’s so easy to manipulate, or even photoshop.  But the UN is doing a campaign to highlight LGBT issues.

That’s it for now, I’m not sure if the Youtube Videos are going to work, they’ve been a bit wonky lately (as has the whole site, actually).  They’ll be some big updates coming next year (when the new version of Joomla is released), so we’ll just stick it out until then.  Hopefully!

Because as we’ve learned this week, the world can still be a scary and awful place.  But we make it better each and every day by coming out and being more visible; and just by that act, reminding those around us that we’re humans.  Just like you.

So if you are in a place where you can safely (physically, emotionally, financially, work-relatedly, yeah, I made that “word” up) come out, start with yourself, and work your way outward.  You’ll feel better, I promise.

And to celebrate the 25th annual national coming out day, a day dedicated to LGBT visibility, a quick video.  And yes, Randy Phillip’s still chokes me up a little bit, because we’re in a world where he had to ask his dad if he would still love him.

All my best,

Mike

It’s been a while, so I have a lot of fun stuff to share, let’s get started.  First up, amazing facts about frogs:

Holy crap, scientists have invented Lightsabers!

The commissioner of the NBA slams the Olympics for their handling of the Russia LGBT laws.  And speaking of, Brian Brown, head of NOM, worked with Russia lawmakers to draft the legislation working its way through the Duma to forcibly take children from LGBT adults.

And lastly about Russia, a music video about the torture of the Russian church:

Sometimes, grandmothers play one of my favorite games, Cards Against Humanity.  Yeah, weird and creepy, and I would have given her the point for that round.

Just like you can’t open a business and refuse to serve the Irish, or women, or Jews, you can’t flat our refuse to serve the LGBT community.  Unless the Republican party gets it way, of course.

The new trailer for the next Hobbit movie:

You’ve probably seen the Chipotle ad that’s making its way across the Internet, but here is the “truth” version.

Here’s a great essay about the impact Harry Potter has.

And another great essay at the Good Men Project about gay sex.

This will make you smile, I promise:

That’s it for now, have a great one!

Alright, let’s see what we have today.  First up, seriously, it’s not hard.  With very few exceptions, there is nothing, absolutely nothing that your brand can add to the 9/11 conversation. Every marketer should memorize this immediately:

And if you ignore that, this is what happens

And interesting and awesome use for a prison, that saves money.

So check out this trailer for Dan Radcliffe’s new movie.  His accent is jaw-dropping.

It’s a scary and bad situation, but it really does look like Mt. Doom in the SF Bay area:

The head of the Sochi Olympic Games has asked the new head of the IOC for help stopping the criticism of Russia’s anti-LGBT laws, which means, at least I think, they’re starting to feel pressure.

A drone’s view of Burning Man 2013:

That’s it for now, short update today.  Have a great one!

Alright, let’s see what we have today, first up, this amazing ad from Guinness:

Also in the world of advertising, this guy spend over $1,000 on Twitter ads because an airline lost his luggage and he wanted them to actually do their job.

The KKK, which is sadly still a thing, had their first-ever meeting with the NAACP, and it was described as “peaceful.”

A new study shows that gun ownership, not suicidal behavior, is actually the highest indicator of suicide.

Hahaha, amazing chart of things said to designers.

So this exists:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIcduHjDMI

Russia is now moving towards forcibly taking children away from LGBT parents.  At the end of the G-20 summit, when Obama met with Activists, they begged him to help get them out of the country.  Things are only going to get worse as we head towards the Olympics.

Utah follows in Florida’s idiotic footsteps.  Again, for those keeping score: those on public assistance are far less likely than the general public to be on drugs, stop wasting money.

And finally, a great idea for a public service campaign:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efAUCG9oTb8

Alright, let’s see what we have today.  First up, Run For Your Lives is coming up.  I did it last year as a zombie and it’s a great time, if you want to join me as a zombie (or meet up afterwards at the party), let me know:

Jimmy Carter has a great essay about equality.

Robyn Miller talked about Myst at this year’s GDC.  A good friend was at the talk and sent me notes right after it ended and I am forever jealous.  Forever.

I saw this on Facebook, and giggled.  You know, since I’m five:

So far, I’ve been as impressed as I can be with the new Pope.  He’s even reached out specifically to the Church of England, and it rumored that he will be the honorary chair of the 2018 Lambeth Conference (although honestly, those are contentious enough as it is, it may cause a lot of added drama).  Guess we’ll have to see what the new Archbishop of Canturbery will do as well.

The man who is Virginia’s attorney general, and running for Governor, is arguing that sodomy should remain illegal in their state.  And just so you know, even though anti-sodomy laws have been struck down by the Supreme Court because they were only used to invade the privacy and prosecute the LGBT community, it technically is any non procreative sex.  Strangely, he won’t answer any questions about his own sex life when asked, you know, just to see if he’s complying with the laws he’s fighting to keep on the books.

And lastly, awesome video showcasing music from the Legend of Zelda:

Alright, let’s see what we have today.

First up, the music video made from all stock footage:

If you haven’t seen it yet, the saddest map in America: by state, how most people post in Craiglist’s missed connections.

I’ve mentioned it before, but just a reminder, the Republicans are only okay with the Violence Against Women Act if it specifically doesn’t protect the LGBT community.

And in Texas, lawmakers want to take away funding from schools that support their LGBT staff and students.

So, I love the original song, but when Gollum sings it, it just adds a certain…something:

Some fun Scrabble ads:

Mantone, the men’s color schemes.

And the Oxford comma discussion continues.  By the way, I usually go by AP Standards.

Meet a new friend in a ball pit:

Bill Nye tells it like it is.

I talked about it before, but the AP has finally come to its senses and is using the accurate terms ‘husband’ and ‘wife’ for all married couples.

And the human jukeboxes:

Rob lays it out.  Remember, if you exercise free speech for your faith (and the haters agree with you), it’s okay.  But use that same free speech to disagree, and you’re satanic.

Fun posters of the lies we tell ourselves and others each day:

As much as I think a celebrity Survivor would be awful, if NPH was on, that would totally be worth it to watch!

So….Mississippi just got around to ratifying the 13th amendment, you know, the one that outlaws slavery.  Awkward.

And no, I would not let this man cut my hair, but it is impressive:

That’s it for now, have a great one!
