Today's Mighty Oak

Alright, a quick update today, let’s see what we have.

First up, a salute to WoW:

Zachary Quinto has a new movie out, and it looks pretty awesome, especially for all the friends in my life who work weddings.

NPH is going to be playing Hedwig on Broadway, and I need to go and see that.  If you’re unfamiliar with “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” it’s the love story only made possible by a back alley castration in East Berlin before the fall of the wall.  Seriously.

And America’s Best Christian, Betty Bowers is back:

That’s it for now, see, really short!  Have a great one!

Alright, let’s see what we have today.  First up, Carbolic Smoke Ball hits it out of the park.

Guns and comic books, covered here by Gutters.

On “Gun Appreciation Day,” which, by the way, is horrid that it coincides with the MLK weekend, three different incidents of people being shot at gun shows.  But just be careful, the organization le pushing for this “appreciation day” are white supremicists.

A good piece on gun ownership, and how it scares me (I mean the author).  And in case you’re wondering about assault weapons, check out Australia.

The best creative confessions:

Deadspin wins the Internet on how to react to Donald Trump.  And gifs come in.

GOProud, the LGBT Republican organization has finally come out to support marriage equality.  You should reread that.  January 18, 2013.  They just not think that marriage equality is worth fighting for.  Anyway, GOProud is a laughable group, trying to trick people into thinking the GOP actually cares about citizens.  And now they’re outraged that they’ve become the laughing stock of the Internet.

Ancient riverbed discovered on Mars.  I just watched Star Talk on Nerdist where they talked about this!

That’s it for now, but I’ll be back with more soon, have a great one!

Hey all, quick update for everyone before I head back to my novel (left than 9K to go!)

First up, my friend Patrick put together an awesome video around DC:

Sooooooo, this is strange.  And what happens when there isn’t a separation of Church and State.  Also, it’s kind of ridiculous the CoE still won’t allow women bishops.  As we’ve said before, the penis is not a direct link to Jesus.

NPH has an awesome new show coming to Nerdist:

And if you’ve watched Crash Course World History (or even if you didn’t), here’s their second blooper reel:

That’s it for now, have a great one!

Alright, let’s see what we have today.

First up, a really cool webpage from Starbucks that allows you to look up referendum that are going on in your state this election.  Note to those in Pa: we got nothing.

But I do have to say to the House of Pa: WTF.  No seriously.  YOU WANT NEWBORN BABIES TO STARVE.  What is wrong with you?!

This is going around, I saw it from Betty Bowers, and of course, Santorum make an appearance:

Amazing take-downs of Ann Coulter.  Although I am loath to even mention it, I hate giving her any attention.

And President Obama takes down Ayn Rand.  Very well done.

But this will make you a smile, a fun radio ad airing in Minnesota.

And quite possibly the best tweet ever:

This has made me happy all day: “Not my problem” in Polish is “nie moj cyrk, nie moje malpy.” Literally “not my circus, not my monkey.”

So here is the first TV spot for The Hobbit:

Or if you’d rather learn about Middle Earth, check out the LotR statistics project.

Penguin and Random House are in talks to merge.  Not great for the publishing world, or readers.

This is really cool:

And finally, coming soon to The Nerdist channel on Youtube:

That’s it for now, have a great one!

Alright, let’s see what we have, first up, this amazing performance by the OSU marching band, the amount of cheering is awesome:

The Tom Hanks/Nerdist typewriter saga.

Since we can’t learn about his tax returns, we can instead, make stuff up.  Sounds legit.

And this is just asshatery at it’s finest.  Much like the owner of Papa John’s saying that if Obama is reelected he’ll have to raise pizza prices for his customers.

Angry Birds Star Wars is coming, and I’m excited.  Cautious, but excited:

PTSD is absolutely vicious, and the VA at best sometimes, seems incompetent.  Will this work, I’m not sure, but I hope it can at least bring some conversation to the table at the condition and how we can work together to support our veterans.

ManMade DIY has a flow chart on how to pick the perfect apple.

If it weren’t for all the tunnel construction (and my schedule), I would go to this play, looks pretty amazing!  And it’s done with Zunes!

I’m so glad that this is now a thing:

I don’t think it will work, sadly, but a valiant effort to have a reasonable conversation about gun violence.

This just confuses me, but I want to make one!

And if you haven’t read it, Chris Kluwe once again knocks it out of the park.  Or I guess I should use some sort of football analogy.

That’s it for now, but I’ll be back soon with more!

Quick update for everyone, hopefully I’ll be back with more soon.  First up, get ready for Bowtie Tuesdays, returning in September!  So for now, learn how to tie a bowtie with Bill Nye:

Apartment Therapy goes over how to disguise video games on a book shelf.  Seems like a lot of work, but I guess if you’re going for a certain look, go for it.

Yes, children should do their chores regardless, but I like this:

Man Made has a cool post up about using a sprinkler and paint to cover surfaces.  I imagine it gets clogged pretty quick, but still kind of cool.

BuzzFeed features two bizarre ads for a Philadelphia ice cream company.  The best comment, “IT PUTS THE ICE CREAM ON ITS SKIN OR ELSE IT GETS THE HOSE AGAIN”

A hotel in England has replaced the Bibles in the rooms with…50 Shades of Grey.  An ingenious marketing stunt, I do have to say.

And Brandon Sanderson announced that he finished the final book (book 14) of The Wheel of Time.  There are still edits to do, but those will mostly be done by others.  It’s a great series, although I got distracted while in book 9, so I’ll be going back to get caught up.  I’m not sure what the status is of the rumored prequels and off shoots (three prequels and two off shoot trilogies), but I’m not really holding my breath.  Here’s the cover, and aside from “The Fires of Heaven,” it’s probably my favorite title in the series:

That’s it for now, but I’ll hopefully be back soon!

Quick update for everyone, let’s see what I’ve found today.  First up, this pretty awesome wallet.  Although the guts of it are too simple for me:

Apartment Therapy has pics and vids of an amazing Star Wars barrel organ, check it out.

Here are the highlights from SpaceX’s Dragon’s dock with the ISS:

Buzzfeed has a list of six really cool pieces of street art, I’m a fan of numbers 2 and 4.

And this amazing promo item from Comic Con:

A very good, and heart-wrenching ad from the Clio’s:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDSMlXlIJSk

Okay, one more video, this is the lineup for the next rollout of The Nerdist shows on youtube, looks amazing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYmtIBfhrW8

Quick update for everyone, I”ll be back with much more very soon as well.

First up, this is just adorable, so if you’re having a bad day, prepare for it to turn around:

Stunning art made from plastic water bottles, you can see more pics here.

Also from Copyranter, an awesome ad for seatbelts and an incredible series for Child Abuse Awareness.  He also has a cool ad buy for an S&M shop, but no one in Pittsburgh would have seen these, you don’t hit the bottom of the ketchup bottle, you smack the ’57’ near the neck with the heel of your hand.

I never even thought of this, but of course, it’s amazing:

Slog has a great post, “Band Names that double as ways I would want to die.”  My favorite: Trampled by Turtles.

This chart is made from data collected this May (2012).  Sigh.

And finally from Nerdist and PBS, a primer on 8-bit art:

That’s it for now, be back soon!

Quick update, let’s see what I have.

First up, an amazing episode of The Flog this week from Geek and Sundry:

You should go read this amazing cartoon from The Oatmeal.  You’ll even learn some things!

From Depressed Copywriter:

And Team Geek and Sundry Faced off against The Nerdist on All Star Bowling:

Another fun update for everyone, hope you enjoy!

Amazing XKCD wedding cake:

XKCD web comic wedding cake

And some other cook cakes from Nerdist.

I’m not sure if this is somehow connected to the book about the Subway system, but there is an indy documentary about the font “Helvetica.”  I need to find a way to see this!

Lifehacker has a good article about how to protect you stuff.  I especially like the idea of setting up a fake porn folder with your contact and reward information on a flash drive.  Genius!  And here is their article about free apps, check it out.

This is scary, there are squid that can jump out of the water.

Hardcore Gaming, which is a strangely very static, web 1.0 type of site, ran an article a while back about Myst.  Check it out if you’re interested, and haven’t heard enough about it from me before.

Here’s a cool video about what if Mozilla made a cell phone:

Need to mix up your board games?  This book will help.

Here’s the projected timeline of the death of newspapers around the world.  We’ll see how this plays out.

And finally, a week without Facebook?  MSNBC tries it out.
