Today's Mighty Oak

A short one today, dare I say that I’m just about caught up (on one source of blogging)!

First up, some karma: three lions killed rhino poachers.

New York has unveiled the first of a series of LGBT monuments that will be going up around the city.  I’m hoping to see some of them when I’m there in December if I have time!

Currently the only gay male athlete in the five major sports, Collin Martin, got a standing ovation for his entrance into his first game since coming out publicly.

And finally, this amazing quote from one of the survivors of the shooting at the Capital Gazette:

I don’t know what I want right now but I’m gonna need more than a couple days of news coverage and thoughts and prayers. Thanks for your prayers but I couldn’t give a f*ck about them if there’s nothing else,” she told the unfazed CNN host.

Alright, let’s see what we have today.  Lots of political news, so fair warning.

Oh, the irony of the NRA creating the database they’ve been screaming about for years.  Oh, the irony.

Rick Perry: Vocally hates Obamacare, quietly asks for $100 million benefit from it.  You know, because he hates it.  So much.

I could probably talk about this over at the King of Spades, but as it turns out, schools with anti-homophobia policies are safer…for all their students.  Amazing.

But then again, according to Justice Scalia, we’re an “invented” minority, and thus don’t deserve equal rights..  I wonder when I first came into being?

And here’s the three articles that make me furious.  An Iraq vet was booed at a city council meeting…because he’s gay.

A church in Tennessee kicks out a family…for supporting their daughter, who just happens to be a lesbian.

And lastly, an interracial couple gets assaulted, and has homophobic slurs thrown at them (they had been out with a gay friend), in New York City, which has this rash of homophobic attacks lately.

Well, this has been a depressing post.  In happier news, I’m heading to a reading of “The Birdcage” tomorrow as a fundraiser for the Zoo (the flamingo enclosure, specifically), and this Saturday is the City of Play Festival.  Come downtown to play some new games and run around downtown, it will be fun!  And if the games aren’t fun, we’ll make it fun!

Very short update, first up, this awesome video of NYC as an amusement park.

And even though it’s sad that this has to be a thing, I’ll have the humor of a five year old and laugh at it:

Quick update for everyone, first up, this trailer for a movie I didn’t realize was being made:

This made me giggle:

Pretty awesome, old pay phone booths will become free public WiFi in NYC.

Amazing shirts that play off of the “Plumber’s Crack.”

It may be crude, but it’s totally true.

This is pretty awesome:

That’s it for now, but I’ll be back with more soon!

Update for everyone, let’s see what we have today.  First up, in major Pittsburgh news, a new program called “Mister Rogers for Adults.” is creating a series of short clips to air before movies and online.  I love Mister Rogers so much, so this is just amazing.  Check out the story here and subscribe via YouTube here.

NYC may be getting an underground park.  Which would be a cool compliment to the raised park that is nearing completion:

In sad news, the famous falling bear was struck by a car and killed.

To make you feel better, watch this video about dogs riding in cars.

MaddowBlog covers the new scare tactic by those who ignore science.

North Carolina will vote in less than a week to inscribe anti-marriage equality into their constitution.  In a strange and sickening turn, the effort has been endorsed by a White Supremacist group, after it was revealed it was written to “protect the white race.”  If that makes no sense to you either, don’t feel bad, it doesn’t to me.  Unless they were more concerned about the news that gay couples are more inter-racial and inter-ethnic (could someone explain the difference to me, please) than straight couples.

To cleanse your palate after that sickening development, watch this video on full-screen with the sound on.

This Week in the Northeast takes a look at what’s going on in the Metblogs network in the northeast U.S. and Canada (while possibly taking some liberties with geography).

Frank takes a look at a hidden treasure of Montreal, the Redpath Museum:

When I reached the second floor, I was completely blown away.  It was like finding a hidden treasure.  A full natural history museum complete with a dinosaur skeleton.

Dhaval checks out a production of Exit the King in New York City:

Susan Sarandon’s fan club must have been in the audience because despite a lousy and monotonous delivery, she received the greatest praise. . . which leads me to believe that the matinee going public in NYC is hungrier for the stars than the actual content of what they go see.

And in Washington, D.C., Patrick discusses the many diseases currently floating about: measles and the swine flu:

Last week measles has been spreading around the area and the city has been working hard to keep it under control. So far it appears the best we could do is to direct it towards another state. I’m not a big fan of Missouri anyways.
