Today's Mighty Oak

Alright, let’s see what we have for today, first up, a new version of Sim City:

The Great Barrier Reef is losing massive amounts of coral, partly because of climate change, but also because of the increase of a certain type of starfish, much like the reefs in the Caribbean are being ravaged by the invasive lionfish.

Tim Cook paid tribute to Steve Jobs, one year after his death.

Someone is going to try to go over the Irish Sea in this, believe it or not:

If you’re a man, and your candidate loses, you may experience a drop in testosterone.  Which may lead you to not again in the future, very strange.

This is really cool, removing some of the growth rings to show younger versions of (dead) trees:

Big Bird was on SNL last week!  I can’t believe I missed that!

Okay, two fire videos, first up:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ev2anNPtfVc

And secondly, a slow motion Molotov Cocktail:

And lastly, a full plane was crashed to learn how to better survive it, Nightline covers it.

Whole bunch of stuff to add in today, still not quite caught up, but it’s a big dent, I hope you enjoy:

It’s no longer illegal to jailbrake your phone!  I could have put this under the Great and Secret Show, but I have some other ideas for that, so I figured I would just link this here.  Hooray!

I have no idea where I found this, but it involves The Muppets and Kick-Ass:

Jane Lynch is going to be hosting SNL!  Be sure to tune in on October 9!

Over the summer we searched for fake merit badges and found this page.  I really like the “Easy Button” on!

How about a lot of Iron Chef America secret ingredients?  Ok:

Amazon is now selling more eBooks than physical books.  Kind of scary, but interesting.  Slate takes a look at it, I can’t remember if it is that article, or another that makes mention of the idea of dynamic eBook covers, which I think is an awesome idea.

Good.  Freaking.  Gravy.  This is why I get fed up with people.

I’ve been reading PostSecret for a while.  Frank’s mail carrier retired, but she put some thoughts up on her own blog.  Check them out here.

And here’s another fun video for you:

And here’s an awesome news story coming from I’m not even sure where.  But I have to say, The strippers sound more level-headed than the pastor:

And I was up at camp when it all went down (and continues to go through the legal system), but here’s some updates on Prop 8 being struck unconstitutional:

Andrew Sullivan pulls out the facts from the Judge’s ruling.  He also links to some other excellent writing.

The lawyers go on both Fox News and CBS, and absolutely destroy their opponents (not legal opponents, in these clips, the talking heads).  Both are amazing to watch.

And strangely enough, Fox News seems to be flipping.  One anchor supports Marriage Equality and Bill O’Reilly tries to make Obama stop enforcing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.

And on a related note, a candidate for Governor of Florida (and their current Attorney General) wants to ban same-sex couples from adopting, based on his personal religious views.  Dan Savage takes him down a few pegs:

We’re not allowed to slam McCollom for this because, you know, he’s talking about his personal, religious faith here… a personal, religious faith that McColloum would like to impose on everyone in Florida by force of law. And I think we can all agree that every child deserves a mother and a father—particularly the 20,000 kids that are in foster care in Florida right now because they were failed, neglected, abused, or abandoned by their mothers and fathers.

And finally, AFER (American Foundation for Equal Rights), the lawyers for the plaintiffs in the trial, put together this video about one of the couples they represent (points for including Wii Tennis!):

Paul and Jeff from American Foundation for Equal Ri on Vimeo.

That’s it for now, catch everyone later!

Quick update for everyone:

Are you on Facebook?  Of course you are, so why don’t you go and become a friend of Episcopal Priest Barbie!  I know, it’s pretty awesome.

This video is pretty cool, would be a neat application for cubicle dwellers, if the feeds could be set to be live from and outside location:

In religion news, I like Wheat Thins, I think they are far superior than Triscuits, but I will stand in solidarity with Triscuit, being as that is one of the names of my car.  Have no idea what I’m talking about?  Neither do I, here’s the quote that started it all:

Darwinist faggots who are as despicable as the rest, walking around eating your Triscuits.”

But Gawker caught up with the spokesperson for Triscuit:

Basil Maglaris, a spokesperson for Kraft Foods, the company that makes Triscuits, was nevertheless also stumped when asked why Islamic extremists might target his innocuous and nutritious charges. “I don’t think we have any comment on that,” he said. “Triscuits are a very popular cracker. We have a broad variety of people who love them these days.”

Except Islamic extremists?

“(Pause.) Everyone loves Triscuits, and we hope that everyone enjoys them.” We consider this to be a coded call for unity and peace. The religious and the secular alike must enjoy the crackers of their choice, free from the tyranny of snack censorship.

And in other religion news, a giant protest was held in Lebanon to demand the separation of Church and State.  Pretty interesting read.

This is a pretty awesome trailer for Super Mario Galaxy 2 (the second half is just color bars, don’t bother watching for any new tidbits).  The entire campaign is really fun, with awesome little sound bites here and there including “Good gravy!”:

Two more videos, then I’ll let you go, first off, Betty White is getting ready to host SNL, here’s the promo:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzrBPscw–g

And finally, I’m an Independent.  But I think I might change my affiliation to Bear Party (I seem to remember this from some time ago, but it’s good to be reminded of it)

I hope everyone had a great Festivus yesterday, enjoy Christmas Eve and Christmas!  And for your enjoyment, here’s what I’ve found lately:

I tend to think that Flash Mobs have been a bit overdone, but this one was cool, even if the music editing took some turns for the worse towards the end:

This showed up on SNL, and I laughed, a lot:

And another video to start off with, I don’t understand chemistry at all.  It makes no sense to me, I’ll stick to physics thank you very much.  However, I think this would have helped a lot:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a45dXztokZM

Carblolic Smoke Ball has done it again, and by done, I mean made me laugh a lot:

Stuttering Caroler Ruins Christmas Concert, Repeats the Sounding Joy

They also report on the newly discovered letter of Saint Paul:

THESSALONIA, Ohio – Theologians are calling Saint Paul’s third letter to the Thessalonians, lost in the mail for 2,000 years because of insufficient postage, but finally delivered and opened last night, a “bombshell” because it urges that Christ be kept out of Christmas.

Breakpoint City, one of my favorite web comics, has once again reminded me that I should make a snowglobe.  Head on over and check it out, you’ll love it!

And here’s a video guaranteed to make you feel insignificant:

And following the ridiculous tradition, CBS cares.  They really, really care:

Really?  Do something “for your woman”?  And while I am glad to see this one including Santa (although I’m sure there are Santas out there who either claim, or really could fill in as a OB-GYN, don’t trust them if they smell like whiskey!), I’m still confused as to why there are ones specifically made for Christmas and Haunakkah. My mind explodes a little bit.

CBS Cares.

Merry Christmas everybody!

All kinds of things to pass on this time.  We’ll start with a new funeral for Edgar Allen Poe.  Kind of cool that he’ll get a proper funeral.  Still kind of creepy.  Point of reference: my bamboo plant is named Edgar and my desk plant is named Poe (Allen was Cat’s bamboo who is dead), and Poe is the inspiration for my favorite beer,  New Holland’s Poet.

Mika has a new video, this one for “Blame it on the Girls.”  However, the second single from his new CD is going to be Rain.  Unless this was already released as a single and I missed it, kind of strange to do a video for it, but still a lot of fun.  I’ve desribed this song as half hip-hop, half flaminco.  Check it out:

I’ve been following this story for a bit, and now it looks like the right to donate blood is going to court, at least in Canada.  And the FDA is looking at the ban here in the U.S.

Just as the last of Polaroid film is set to expire, it is announced that it is coming back.  I’m actually excited for this, the Polariod is very iconic, and I’m glad to see it come back from the dead.

Yep, there’s a Rep for that.

So I’ve been looking for a new computer once Windows 7 comes out later this month.  I’ve looked at HP”s and Gateway’s.  Now I found a Sony I really like.  Check it out here.

Looking for a new , fun blog that may at some point be bought by icanhazcheeseburger?  Try Acronyms Sometimes Suck (ASS).

Here’s a great article from io9 about the relationships brough to us by Joss Whedon.  Caution, possible spoilers about Firefly.

Here’s a cool graph charting job losses.  Check out Pittsburgh, we were doing great until we literally got swallowed up by other cities.

An artist takes over the screens at a New York Best Buy.  Pretty cool, I kind of wish this would happen more often.

I really liked this sketch from SNL last night:

And finally today, here is the original painting.  You can hover your mouse over to get more information about all the people and objects in the piece.  And here is the updated version, including a cameo by Emperor Palpetine!

That’s it for now, have a great one!

A bigger post to come (including another big link update), but I wanted to post this awesome sketch from SNL last night:

Ok, for whatever reason, I can’t embed the video here, but check out this great video from The Colbert Report.

Also, if you didn’t, check out SNL from this weekend, it was fantastic! The link for whatever reason doesn’t include the “Single Ladies” clip with Beyonce and Justin Timberlake, but it shows some of the sketches, so check it out.
