Today's Mighty Oak

A short one today, dare I say that I’m just about caught up (on one source of blogging)!

First up, some karma: three lions killed rhino poachers.

New York has unveiled the first of a series of LGBT monuments that will be going up around the city.  I’m hoping to see some of them when I’m there in December if I have time!

Currently the only gay male athlete in the five major sports, Collin Martin, got a standing ovation for his entrance into his first game since coming out publicly.

And finally, this amazing quote from one of the survivors of the shooting at the Capital Gazette:

I don’t know what I want right now but I’m gonna need more than a couple days of news coverage and thoughts and prayers. Thanks for your prayers but I couldn’t give a f*ck about them if there’s nothing else,” she told the unfazed CNN host.

Alright, let’s see what we have today.  First up, the Patton Oswalt Star Wars filibuster (all from his head by the way, not scripted) has been animated:

As the debate about voter ID laws continue, here’s some startling facts:

Between 2000 and 2010 there were 649 million votes cast in general elections; 47,000 UFO sightings; 441 Americans killed by lightning; and 13 credible cases of in-person voter impersonation.

So this is really, really scary: a child has burst into flames…four times!  And to be fair, he would more likely be part of the FF (Fantastic Four/Future Force, whatever they’re called at the moment).

Awesome music video from Mumford and Sons…and fiends:

A federal court has struck down a bigoted anti-Islamic law in Oklahoma.  It’s really nice to see that, as there has been a rash of hatred in the south (and the west) and it all seems so knee-jerk racism with no grounds in reality.

Good news, the American Bar Association is pushing a ban on using the “gay panic” defense.  Nice to see that making its way forward as well.

This is a bit sadistic, but fun to watch.  Turn on the English closed captions to know what’s going on:

That’s it for today, have a great one!

Alright, let’s see what we have today.  First up, an amazing story from the world of soccer.  Fans were shouting racial slurs at a player, so the entire time left the pitch.

This is an awesome job.  The benefits are pretty amazing:

A Swiss bank is closing after admitting it helps US citizens evade their taxes.

I think I linked to it before, but the House GOP killed the Violence Against Women Act because this year, it added three extra groups: immigrants, Native Americans and the LGBT community.  So yes, they can agree to protect women if they’re white and straight.  But otherwise, nope.

But this is really cute, our youngest Senator:

Scientists have made a model of what Mars may have looked like if it was more Earth-like, i.e. our climate, water coverage and ecosystems.

The sad state of communications:

I kind of hope Taco Bell pulls this off, the press they would get from it would be amazing.  I still have trouble believing an athlete eats that much Taco Bell though.

This is what it looks like when a polar bear wants to eat you:

So….the Pope denounced selfish capitalism:

Don’t forget that that throne is encrusted with jewels.

Okay, that’s it for now, have a great one everyone!
