Today's Mighty Oak

Alright, let’s see what we have today!

First up, the trailer for In The Heights. I saw the show, and am so excited for this movie:

As an independent, I know I don’t (currently) have a say in the democratic primary, but in the last cycle, O’Malley was my pick. And hey look, he’s still feisty!

Speaking of politics, I’ve lost a lot of enthusiasm for Mayor Pete (but, as I wrote about before, I am still really, really proud of his candidacy and his staunch defense of liberal Christianity), and just like before, I don’t think he’ll end up being the nominee. That being said though, he takes a lot of heat unnecessarily for being ‘the wrong kind of gay.’ And that is incredibly hurtful, both within the community and without. There has been some great writing (which of course, I”m missing the link for currently) about Pete and the idea of ‘the best little boy in the world,’ and I think understanding that mentality helps us better understand where he comes from and how he approaches the political realm. All in all though, I’m be voting blue, no matter who.

Dumb Runner knocks it out of the park with their coverage of the 1:59 challenge.

It’s from earlier this year, but still great, the ‘trailer’ for Oscar:

In awesome news from the government (yes, actually), the FCC is setting up a nationwide three-digit suicide hotline.

Someone went through and read every piece of advice Dan Savage has ever dolled out, and they sum up their findings. It’s all great advice!

As we’re in the holidays, if you need a yule log video to cast up to a TV, Nerdist has a good roundup. I typically go with the Darth Vader one.

The amazing mash up of Hamilton and The Mandalorian:

Disney+ is bringing us a Star Wars game show next year!

My friend Nate has an amazing piece about our running team and the lessons he’s learned and how we’re learning from each other (and building each other up). Give it a read.

A reminder from The Oatmeal: be kind.

That’s it for now, have a great one!

Alright, let’s see what’s been going on.  First up, did you know that Harry Potter makes you more understanding of others?  It’s true!

Joseph Gorden Levitt writes about Star Wars: The Last Jedi (spoilers, obviously).

Like me, do you need a chart to see who owns the rights to which superhero?  Well this chart is handy (but won’t be accurate for long, I’m sure).

Super Mario Bros. in ragtime:

These are really bad times for queer people.  Just recently, the federal government has taken steps to allow doctors to deny services to anyone because they’re part of the LGBT community.

A new study has shown that 40% of LGBT high school students have considered suicide due to bullying because they’re queer.

The majority of people still think it’s okay for businesses to discriminate against queer people.  And the Supreme Court denied an appeal and Mississippi’s law allowing businesses to discriminate is able to stand.

Waste of oxygen and poor excuse for a human being, Mike Pence, will officially lead the US Olympic delegation and openly gay figure skater Adam Rippon is having none of it.

And in other slightly better news, Senator Doug Jones’ son, who is gay, stared down Mike Pence at his father’s swearing in and it made my day.

Here’s the Star Wars Cantina Theme played with pencil and paper, writing out a math equation:

In better news, a new ruling from the International Court of the Americas (didn’t know that was a thing) is bringing marriage equality to a lot of different countries (potentially)

And new year’s resolutions for gay men (and everyone, in some cases).  And speaking of resolutions, Surviving the World has a great coming about them.

Watch a Katana disappear.  Makes me think of the novel, “The 50 Year Sword”

Quite possibly the best thing ever, a T-Rex conducts the Jurassic Park theme music.

Pittsburgh non-profits come out hard against the PG and it’s owner’s racist editorial, published on MLK Day.

And finally, a great little comic about our place in the universe.

Alright let’s see what we have today. First up, I’m really hoping I can figure out a way to go see this, but here is the first poster of NPH as Hedwig.

A huge chart of beer. Freaking huge.

Chris Christie, Governor of NJ, is a giant asshole.  He’s on the record stating that if one of his kids was gay, he would tell them they had no right to get married.  No, I take that back, he’s not an asshole, he’s a fucking monster.

A medal was struck to commemorate Pope Francis’s first year and it quotes Lesus. Yep, they misspelled Jesus.

In case you forgot, Pat Robertson is a raging, evil asshole.  And Ccn we all just agree that Pat Robertson is just really reaching for ratings at this point?

In case you missed it, Firefly is coming back as a comic!

My favorite Halloween costume:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkBDRUO8hAo

On Jupiter and Saturn, it rains diamonds.

I’m not sure what’s going on with Vogue UK, but if you put in the Konami code, you see a raptor.  Seriously.

This is such a tragic and sad story.  Get the Kleenex ready.

A new kind of horror movie:

Also in the spirit of Halloween, living with Jigsaw.

Jessica Chobot is coming back to the Internet, this time on The Nerdist!

A statistic that will shock no one with a brain: when funding for mental health goes down, suicides go up.

The big Disney songs from our childhood:

The headline is a bit ridiculous, but still not cool.  But of course, it’s Fox News, so it shouldn’t surprise anyone.

I’ve never really trusted the ads using Google autocomplete, only because it’s so easy to manipulate, or even photoshop.  But the UN is doing a campaign to highlight LGBT issues.

That’s it for now, I’m not sure if the Youtube Videos are going to work, they’ve been a bit wonky lately (as has the whole site, actually).  They’ll be some big updates coming next year (when the new version of Joomla is released), so we’ll just stick it out until then.  Hopefully!

Alright, let’s see what we have today, first up, this amazing ad from Guinness:

Also in the world of advertising, this guy spend over $1,000 on Twitter ads because an airline lost his luggage and he wanted them to actually do their job.

The KKK, which is sadly still a thing, had their first-ever meeting with the NAACP, and it was described as “peaceful.”

A new study shows that gun ownership, not suicidal behavior, is actually the highest indicator of suicide.

Hahaha, amazing chart of things said to designers.

So this exists:

Russia is now moving towards forcibly taking children away from LGBT parents.  At the end of the G-20 summit, when Obama met with Activists, they begged him to help get them out of the country.  Things are only going to get worse as we head towards the Olympics.

Utah follows in Florida’s idiotic footsteps.  Again, for those keeping score: those on public assistance are far less likely than the general public to be on drugs, stop wasting money.

And finally, a great idea for a public service campaign:

Okay, a big update, finally really getting through a lot of old e-mails to myself, so let’s take a look.

First up, an awesome video of a lunar eclipse.  Check it out.

I’ve seen their stop-motion Tetris before, but never this video:

Want to make 3-D movies at home?  Lifehacker has you covered, but you need two identical cameras

I think I’m going to do this, I already have Twitter updated each day with a new background, so this would be nice to see as well on my desktop.

Awesome execution of an ad, and like he says, hopefully it works.

A strange site, but cool stuff.  I particularly enjoy the adjustable tables and the hoodie.

I think I’ve posted this before, but it’s really pretty.  Although I worry about removing the beer from the keg just to put into this system.

So, this is a real thing:

This seems just unnecessary.  Cats, let loose in IKEA.

Someone made CFLs look much better, I like them a lot:

Okay, that’s it for now, but I’ll be back again soon!

Another fun update for you, let’s take a look at what I’ve found online for you.

First up, need an explosion?  Just use this link and click the button.  Thank you Old Spice.

And again, if you haven’t seen it, go see The Muppets:

Facebook has announced a new anti-suicide help tool.  Pretty awesome!  Although there are so many status updates that are just lyrics, this will be tough to work out:

Awesome article: Everyone should work a service job.  God how much did I hate folding the basic tee table at Bauer?

George Takai gets us all behind a common cause:

No words can enhance this amazing sign:

Check out this revisioning of the Dark Knight Rises trailer:

Check out the best wedding and engagement photos from 2011 here.

Pantone released their color of the year.  Eh, not impressed.

This looks amazing, I had no idea it was being made:

I love Google’s sense of humor, check out the instructions to walk to Mordor.

Occupy Wall Streets becomes Lego Sets!  Not really, but cool idea from Slate.

A fun Star Wars Video:

That’s it for now, back with more soon!
