Today's Mighty Oak

Alright, catching up on a bit of a backlog in addition to some current items, but let’s see what we have today. First up, a favorite web comic/series, Surviving the World is returning with classic reposts! Here’s where he ended it. Class Dismissed.

Science news you can use: don’t drink your whiskey ‘neat’:

The United Methodist Church is splitting over gay issues. As someone who has come out of that on the other side, hey welcome, it’s a bumpy ride. Sorry you have to do this, it’s painful.

This fight (is still going on all across the country) happened in September in Arizona. Their GOP governor said they don’t need to extend non-discrimination protections to gay people, and their supreme court said businesses can deny service to gay people. The fight continues, and is seemingly never ending.

In other disturbing news, the Interior Department cut sexual orientation from their internal discrimination policies as well.

I wrote earlier about my displeasure at Marvel (and Star Wars) for LGBT erasure. The upcoming film, The Eternals, will, for the first time, feature a gay superhero (and kiss). Yes, it’s progress. Should it have taken 11 years? No.

In other movie news, the trailer for the new Wes Anderson film looks amazing:

If you haven’t, check out Eastsiders on Netflix. It was an amazing series, and here’s an interview with the creator.

Stranger Things 4 gives us a present from Russia (with love).

In good news, a New York state park will be named for Marsha P. Johnson!

The Church of England said sex is only for straight, married people. Then they apologized for offending people, not actually changing their minds.

Firefighters who got angry comments when they showed their support for the queer community hit back in an awesome video.

NASA is adding a luxury hotel to the ISS. Spoiler, if you’re reading this, you will not be able to afford visiting.

An awesome video from a favorite creator that I’ve been mulling over: death and minimialism:

The Utah Governor pulled the campaign that put AMAZING art on condoms to prevent STIs. They’re all great, and it’s a shame he pulled them.

Speaking of, the UK has seen a massive decline in HIV infections due to PrEP. No surprise there.

The Catholic bishops in Texas have blasted their governor (who is Catholic)over his rule to not accept refugees. I’m highly, highly critical of the Catholic Church, so I have to give them points when it’s appropriate. Good for them.

Disney is announcing more details of their immersive Star Wars hotel for their resorts, and it looks amazing and I can’t wait to go!

Google pretty much hit it out of the park with their Superbowl ad:

And another great ad, this time from Microsoft:

Alright, let’s see what we have today. First up, Randy Rainbow is back with the Cell Block Tango:

The new president of Nintendo of America is named…Bowser.

A puppy gets emotional over the death of Mufasa in The Lion King.

Kim Davis must pay the victims of her bigotry, a court has ruled.

I had no idea there is a new biopic about JRR Tolkien coming out! See the trailer here.

Postmodern Jukebox takes on Pinky and the Brain.

And finally, the trailer from the Super Bowl for Avengers: Endgame:

Alright, let’s see what we have today, first up, amazing wood-carved nintendo cartridges!  That you can really play!

Two Political Junkies fixed a recent Post-Gazette headline.

Speaking of Pittsburgh, there is going to be a Mr. Rogers biopic!  I am so, so excited about this!

My favorite Super Bowl ads were from Tide:

Philadelphia Eagles flocked to a bar called ‘The Eagle’ due to its name.  Here’s a hint, if there’s a bar named ‘The Eagle,’ chances are it’s a gay leather bar.

Speaking of the Super Bowl, Deadpool live tweeted it.

And speaking of Ryan Reynolds, as much as I’m against the remake, he will be staring in the new Clue, which I think he’ll do well in.

An amazingly cute and heartwarming story of a woman who called a gay bar after her son came out to her.

The new Harry Potter movies are hiding the fact that Dumbledore is supposed to be gay, and it’s bullshit.

There is going to be a Harry Potter cruise however.

The Olympics may be over, but this video will be with us forever:

I’m calling bullshit on the ‘gay Porgs’ in Star Wars.  The fact that this is a multibillion dollar franchise so embedded into our culture and we get gay background animals if we squint and know some obscure fact, instead of actual representation is humiliating.  LucasFilm and Disney can do better.

Bermuda has rescinded their marriage equality, much like California did with Prop 8.

Trulia now shows you the rights you’ll have as a queer person when looking at homes on the market.  Our rights are a patchwork and it can be really confusing remembering what rights I have where, so this is a really nice feature, but so sad that it’s needed.

A California court has sided with an anti-gay baker.  I will remind you that this is not really about cake.  It’s about basic human dignity.  And the fact that I have to worry about what hospital and doctors I see, because they can turn me away.  It’s about the fact that funeral homes can turn loved ones away all by citing religious freedom.  It’s about bigotry.

And research has showed that acceptance of the queer community has actually dropped.  Less than half of the adults surveyed are comfortable with my existence.  Neat.

Alright, that’s it for now, go back and watch those Olympians strip down!

Alright, let’s see what we have today.  First up, the only way to present a puppy:

Lord of the Rings tarot cards, pretty awesome artwork!

There will be a fantasy league for the puppy bowl this year.  Yes, you did read that correctly.

A little late for this year (unless you celebrate Orthodox Christmas), but this is well done:

The Onion takes on hell.  And it’s fabulous take-over.

How big is the moon?  This big.

How a choir of “silent monks” did to celebrate Christmas.

A son’s Christmas gift to his dad:

An alternate ending to Harry Potter, very well done, actually.

How Libertarians have failed the country on gay rights.

When Thomas Kinkade and Star Wars mix.  Pretty awesome!

That’s it for now, have a great one everybody!

Quick update for everyone, first up, check out this awesome recap of all the Superbowl ads:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cc2SmA40LtE

So…..The Onion is awesome.  Especially when a Republican congressman links to it as a real story.  Check it out here, and check out the reviews on Yelp of the Abortionplex.

When I’m old, I want one of these.

And the third in the series of The Magicians fan art, here is Alice:

Let’s see what we have today:

Maddow Blog has a follow up to a story about the lack of parades for vets coming home.  Aside from St. Louis (which was entirely citizen-funded), there has not been a parade for any returning troops.  But they can put together a parade in two days for Super Bowl champs.  Sad.

And speaking of the troops, an artist has done a project entitled “The impact of war on a young person’s face.”  Interesting stuff.

Virginia Senator Howell is amazing.  When faced with a bill that now (I believe it passed) makes it mandatory for women seeking abortions to get ultrasounds, she proposed an amendment (which barely lost) requiring men to get a rectal exam and cardiac screening if they wanted to get a prescription for ED medication.

I’ve been meaning to post this before, looks pretty awesome:

Here’s an update to the wall outlet I posted about last week.  These are more flush with the wall, and this time, diagrams on how to wire it!

Interested in SOPA/PIPA and what kicked it all off?  Information is Beautiful took a look at the actual numbers, and they are a bit surprising, check it out.

I know some people are excited about this, but honestly, I don’t think they will end up being very good.  Hopefully I’m proved wrong, but either way, DC is moving forward with the Watchmen prequel series.

Scientists are working towards making your internal monologue being able to be broadcast.  While this will of course help medical technology a lot (think of those in comas, the deaf and those with developmental disabilities), but holy crap, that would be awful if my inner monologue was public.  Then again, maybe the people who annoyed me would leave me alone finally.

JCPenny is redesigning all their stores.  Interesting to see, especially since my local store is moving from one of the mall to the other, so it’s good timing for them at least.

Remember how Republicans love to campaign against voter fraud, the boogeyman that is not really a problem according to all studies, but it’s a good way to push through legislation that disenfranchises those who tend to vote democratic.  But as it turns out, the latest verified case of voter fraud was by a Republican Secretary of State (of Indiana).  Oh the irony.

That’s it for now, have a great one!

Happy Monday everyone!  Let’s see what we have today:

First up, this ad aired only in Canada during the Super Bowl, but I really like it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0qZYqdsYAg

Interesting ad from Copyranter:

What a strange caveat.

Lego is releasing LotR sets, and I’m super excited for them, as well as the inevitable video games.  Check it out here.

Amazing post from Literally Unbelievable:

I still need to see Thor and Captain America, but here is the preview for Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, and I’m already making plans to go see it:

Another ad from Copyranger, kind of awesome, would be cool to see this run in City Paper:

I love the toast to Jared in this:

And this ad has been making its rounds, I think it’s fairly well done (or at least a good idea, the art needs some work), although a objectifying to women, I hope there’s a male counterpart in the campaign:

And finally, every presentation you’ll sit through, ever:

Couple quick things for everyone, more coming later.

First up, the definitive explanation of The Crown:

Hot on the heels of The Super Bowl, and really any professional sporting event:

We knew he was coming back, and here it is.  I think the fondu (which for the life of me, and spell check, I can’t write out correctly) was a nice touch:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3R2cnxz27LI

This bottle sounds amazing, but I don’t really need any more, but maybe a reader is in the market.  Also, if you don’t read UpaDowna, it’s a fun site!

Again, Bill O’Reilly is a moron.  I can’t stress this enough.  Check out the background here, a bunch of fun photos here, including my favorite:

Did you know that The Pope can’t donate his organs?  Because that’s helpful.  Can we stop calling Catholics pro-life soon?

This looks amazing, and I kind of want to do it:

Rachel Maddow has a great post about what to do with the empty House chamber, since you know, they aren’t doing much.

If you’ve read Blink (I need to) or Tipping Point (I have), check out the Malcolm Gladwell book generator.

Check out this awesome map of good beer.  Also, poor Idaho!

And finally, my buddy Ken sent this to me, one of these days, I’ll finish Infinite Jest (after starting it probably 20 or so times).  It’s really my white whale.
