There is no federal constitutional right to same sex-marriage. It doesn’t exist. There is no federal constitutional right to same sex-marriage. There isn’t such a right. You would have to really have a ridiculous and absurd reading of the U.S. constitution to reach the conclusion that people have a right to marry someone of the same sex. There is no such constitutional right….This is not a policy against anyone. I believe, as do a significant percentage of Americans, that the institution of marriage, an institution that existed before government, that has existed before laws, that institution should remain in our laws recognized as the union of one man and one woman.
Are gay marriage opponents being bullied? No. The Freedom of Speech does not mean you can’t be criticized. It means the government won’t throw you in jail for non-violent-inducing language.
Straight people are apparently horrible. Because, according to far-right logic, if gay people get married, they’ll abort all their babies. Unravel the mental gymnastics here.
And speaking of abortions, Republicans in Colorado love them so much they gutted funding to a program proven to not only reduce the number of abortions in the state, but also save the state money. Because they really, really don’t want anyone having sex. Seriously, that’s what this all comes down to.
Alright, let’s see what we have today. First up, December can’t come fast enough. I’ve watched this and obsessed over it, but haven’t posted it here yet:
Ryan Reynolds revealed the awesome Deadpool costume:
If you haven’t seen the documentary “Bridegroom,” check it out (with a box of tissues), it’s on Netflix, in Redbox and you can probably find it online. There was a protect going on during a screening and Shane Crone had a great response to them.
One of my favorite authors, Terry Pratchett, passed away. He was an outspoken advocate for the rights of those with dementia and for medical-assisted suicide. His Discworld novels are amazing, and I highly recommend them!
President Obama’s speech at Selma, required viewing:
Francis claimed people who ‘manipulate’ their bodies are similar to ‘Herods’ that “destroy, that plot designs of death, that disfigure the face of man and woman, destroying creation.”
He made the comments in a new book published in Italy, Pope Francis: This Economy Kills, speaking out against what is known as gender theory.
“Let’s think of the nuclear arms, of the possibility to annihilate in a few instants a very high number of human beings,” Pope Francis stated, according to the National Catholic Reporter.
“Let’s think also of genetic manipulation, of the manipulation of life, or of the gender theory, that does not recognize the order of creation.”
And here is the big issue: trans* individuals, especially minors, are already at significantly higher rates of abuse, depression and assault. The Pope leads a church of 1.2 billion, and many of those members hang on to his every word.
When someone with that kind of clout and power says that an entire minority is “a manipulation of life,” there are consequences. Dire consequences for those individuals who already have to fear mob violence in their everyday life.
The more and more I watch this pope, the more of the same it is. Lip service of actual respect and dignity, but the same harmful and hateful statements that lead to more violence and deaths. This Pope may have captured the hearts of the world, even those outside of the Catholic Church, but he is still dangerous, and still the leader of a very dangerous organization.
From his about to be released new album, the live version of All American Boy:
There’s a lot of legal wrangling, but a pilot for the Wheel of Time was made. It’s not good. But I like to think it was thrown together as a throw-away prologue just so a studio could try to keep the rights when they go to court.
There’s a lot of problems over at the Delta Foundation, the group that runs Pride in Pittsburgh. Equal, their magazine stopped publishing after not paying writers or their printer, board members are resigning and the (unpaid? Really, he says he’s unpaid, but I wouldn’t exactly believe that) President is still hanging on. We’ll see how Pride goes this year, there were a lot of people angry with how Pride in the Street was handled last year.
Pat Robertson, astonishingly, is wrong. He thinks gays will die out since we can’t reproduce. Well, we’re still here, because straight people keep making us….
So, the Archbishop of Canterbury (who is under strange laws in England where they have marriage equality but are not permitted to perform them in Anglican churches, that’s what happens when they’res a state religion I suppose), is refusing to say why he opposes marriage equality.
And speaking of marriage equality, this is the year we’ve had:
And what may be the endgame for marriage equality, SCOTUS will hear the cases before the sixth circuit (Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee), and we should have a ruling by the end of June. Please pardon me while I’ll be nervously waiting.
I might have linked this before, but it’s really funny:
Ireland will be voting on marriage equality, and foes have started their lying ads already. But they have their work cut out for them, because of the massive child abuse scandal from the Catholic Church, they have lost all trust and credibility from the Irish people. And they’re fighting against marriage equality, turning many citizens towards equality.
The only openly gay representative in Alabama is threatening her colleagues: if they push back against LGBT legislation, she’ll publicly out the ones having extra-marital affairs. Now she’s getting death threats.
And asshat Sally Kern (representative in Oklahoma), even though she “totally has gay friends, you guys,” pulled her “right to discriminate” bill, but still has two radically anti-gay bills pending
