dollhouse Rewatch: Echo (unaired pilot)

I’ll be writing down my thoughts about Joss Whedon’s “dollhouse,” as I rewatch both seasons.  There will probably be lots of spoilers, since I’ll be watching it as someone who has seen the entire series.  I’m not going to be looking at the show through any one lens, any specific type of criticism, just putting down some thoughts about each episode.

Echo is the unaired pilot for dollhouse.  A good chunk of the material that was presented was reused in later episodes.  It wasn’t a bad pilot, although when you compare it to what served as the first episode, it shows its weaknesses.

The first thing I noticed, was the imprint chair was different.  I’m glad they redesigned it, it looks much better, more sleek.  Also, Topher keeps repeating the phrase “man-friend” to Boyd.  More so than in later episodes, to the point where it was annoying.

I think the editing was better in this than what became the first episode.  Although a lot of this episode is hard to judge since large chunks of the plot were changed, making this episode apocryphal.

This episode is actually hard to write about, since it ends up not really fitting into the time line at all, since what happens turns out not to have.  Still good to watch nonetheless, but it’s better to start off with Ghost instead.
