Today's Mighty Oak

Alright everyone, I have a lot of stuff to post again, so bear with me.

First off, Dollhouse went off the air two weeks ago, I’m still sad about it, but I highly suggest you watch it on DVD (skip the first few episodes of Season 1 and start with “Man on the Street”), in case you’re wondering here’s what you missed (spoilers, obviously):

Priya’s painting from season one was auctioned off for over $6,000, all going to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.  And io9 recaps why we’ll miss Dollhouse, and it’s an excellent read.

But luckily, Lost is back.  Here’s what you missed the first five seasons:

And here are Newsweek staffers who have never seen Lost trying to explain what’s going on:

A new series of books is going to be published via Geocaching.  I saw an updated interview with the author, and he’s trying to spread them all over the globe, pretty cool, but kind of impractical.  Also, I don’t seem very interested in the books themselves.  Oh well.

Thankfully, PG+ has more than 35 members.  And by the way, it’s awesome!  I’ll be writing about it over at Metblogs pretty soon I hope.

Thanks Supreme Court:

I’m not sold on the iPad, if it was open to more than just the app store, I think I would get one, but right now, I don’t think it’s worth it.  Check out Slog’s coverage of it, icnluding this gem of a sentence:

UPDATE: Post edited and cleaned up, because I was drunk.

Pensblog has an awesome guide to hockey fans.  Check it out here.  And the game is still going on tonight but the doors open early at 6 p.m.

One of the guys I work with is the Mayor of North Irwin!  I call him Mr. Mayor now.  Apparently the city council just fights a lot, so I want to get a group from work to show up with posters and bells like at a little league game or something.  I think it would be fun.  Also, as I like to mention, he won by 23 votes: mandate of the people!

Berger and Green made it to BoingBoing!  Oh boy!  Explosion!

Betty Bowers, America’s best Christian is back, this time, she’s cooking:

Ever wonder what the 57 Heinz varieties are/were?  Check them out here.

A Dr. Pepper flash mob took over the NYSE, they were not too amused.

Words.  Can’t.  Comprehend.  Ewwww?

I can’t embed it, but here’s the link to Pink’s awesome performance at the Grammy’s.  It reminds me of her performance in Australia, pretty awesome.

Jesus gets a make over:

JESUS2000 from jesus 2000 on Vimeo.

NPR has a great article about the passage of time, and how we perceive it as we age.  Check it out.

Rob Tisinai is back, his videos are articulate, well researched, and just all around amazing:

The Don’t Ask Don’t Tell hearings continue on.  Want to see McCain absolutely owned?  Check out this link.  Not that he’ll change his stance, but it’s great to see nonetheless.  Here’s more reactions to the hearings.

This is pretty awesome, and I think Pat would really dig it:

I commented earlier about the first legal male prostitute, and how he, ahem, compared himself to Rosa Parks.  Yeah, he’s not bright at all.  Well, the New York Post partook in his services (not all of them), check it out, but be ready to laugh a lot, and barf.

And if that didn’t enrage you enough, check out these three links about the “relief work” Scientologists are doing in Haiti.  Disgusting.  Because Haiti doesn’t need food or water, no, they need machines to con them into thinking they have dead alien spirits inside them.  If you’re still looking for something to do to help, look no further than Savage Love, Facebook, and an awesome idea.

Are you going to be appearing on The Daily Show?  Read these tips first!

I talked about it over at Metblogs, but The Big Money also covers the redesign of the Heinz ketchup packet.

Have you been to SellecWaterfallSandwich?  It’s exactly what you think it is.

I like the ads, especially the first one, a lot.  However, I do have to agree, I won’t be taking marriage advise from Utah thankyouverymuch.  Also, the comments are a great read!

Want to commemorate the recent snow, get the t-shirt (I also suggest the map of Pittsburgh shirt):

That’s all I have for now, I have more, but I need to take a break, this has been a long post, but I’m almost all caught up!  Catch everyone in a little bit!

Alright, I’m finally starting to go through everything from last month, let’s see how much I can cram into this one post before it gets too unwieldy or I get lost and confused.  I’ll try to break up the links with images and videos, so read and click away!

I’ve followed the story here and abroad for a while because I’ve found it extremely interesting, but it seems that now gay men can donate bone marrow in Canada.  Another step in the right direction for Canada, we’ll see how long it takes the U.S. to follow.  Sweden also recently ended their ban on gay blood donation.

I kind of like Lady Gaga’s music, and even though she sometimes comes off as bat-shit crazy, she really is a good person.  Seen here, she meets Queen Elizabeth II, obviously knowing when to pick her publicity/battles.  I wonder what she would be called if she was ever given the title “lady”?

This is kind of crazy, but strands of tiger DNA has been found in the AIDS virus.  From what I’ve read, it is thought that HIV/AIDS came from monkeys (I think), so I’m not sure how this fits in with research and whatnot.  But in a giant breakthrough, researchers have found that stem cells can kill HIV, or at least, have the proof of concept.

Have you seen the Wii’s holiday ad, I really like it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGRaTaNCPMc

Are you in a dire situation?  Just hit the button.

If you haven’t seen it, PostSecret’s new video is pretty amazing:

PostSecret: Confessions on Life, Death and God from Frank Warren on Vimeo.

The Episcopal Church elected its first openly lesbian bishop.  Canterbury isn’t too happy, I can’t even imagine (or care for that matter) what ex-bishop Duncan is saying.

When you click through to see Yale students protesting some evangelical preacher on their campus, make sure to see how many categories on his sandwich board you fall into.  Obama voters, Dirty Dancers (really?), Hindus, Feminists…you’re all on there.  And going to hell, apparently.  Like I always say, it will be a party, and we’re all apparently invited!

And here is a picture of my favorite protester, Chris Pesto from Syracuse:

This link from Gizmodo, is an awesome cheat sheet for buying a new TV, check it out if you’re in the market.

I think the evangelical preacher at Yale would like this link.  It ends up making me angry if I read too much, but if you want to see the hilarious things that people worry about, namely, people working retail during December that would dare to with you “happy holidays” instead of “merry Christmas.”  Stupid people aren’t allowed to believe things that I don’t.  Currently the most offensive, GAP, mostly due to their awesome commercials.  Here’s an example:

I am absolutely sickened by the new Gap commercial comparing Christmas to Solstice and “do what you like”. I will NOT shop at the Gap, Old Navy, or their sister stores any more nor will my teenagers. …

And here’s the commerical

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVMPWlWDvsI

I’m liking the campaign mostly because it’s pissing off the right so much.  And from what I can gather, a direct response to the right after they pulled shenanigans back in the fall.

Speaking of good ads, I love this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovMbBEZNXuE

As well as this campaign for Levi’s:

Also, this one for Discovery Channel:

Someone alert the Russians, vodka is now available in pill form.

I’ll go ahead and say no, progress bars on traffic lights is not a good idea.  But interesting idea though.

The Catholic diocese of St. Louis sent $10,000 to Maine to help overturn their marriage equality law.  I have a big post coming up for that, with all kinds of links and updates, really everything that has happened since NaNoWriMo, and the election at the beginning of November.  People are now protesting the diocese of St. Louis, but truth be told, $10,000 was just a drop in the bucket.  It will make your skin crawl, stay tuned.

Dollhouse may be cancelled, but their marketing is just really starting up (thanks a lot, Fox), here is Rossum’s November ad:

I don’t understand this at all, how it works, or even that it could be done.  Scientists have trapped a rainbow, and my mind just exploded a little bit.

I found this song on a mix CD that I’ve had for a while, and I’m really liking it, although the music video leaves a lot to be desired:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EF-3TUcva9M

If I was in Seattle, I would go here, and blow up golf balls and use cannons for mini-golf!  I would go there a lot.

This has been making its rounds, and it rocks:

And since it is the end of the decade, we’ll be getting lot of these vidoes.  Although I think this left out a lot of stuff, it’s a good start.

Ok, one more video then I’ll break it up a little bit.  This video made me like Martha Stewart a lot.  It’s a good thing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ow_nZO8vfQ

If you liked Harry Potter, or even if you didn’t, you should really read The Magicians, I read it, and could not put it down, and was really hoping there would be more than one, but as of now, it’s a one off book.  However, you should pick it up, it examines what a magical world would be like if it was college, instead of a prep school, and the hazards and problems young adults have to face instead of teenagers.  Check out this article from io9 about it if you’re interested, and you should be.

Ok, I think that’s it for now, sorry for the length, although there is still a lot more for me to go through and post for you.  I’ll be back with more soon, enjoy the day!

Alright, here’s a regular update for everyone:

First off, if you didn’t see Dollhouse on Friday, check it out, and make sure to watch it next week (Fox at 9 p.m.):

Slate has been running a project called the Change-o-Meter.  I tried putting it in the sidebar, but it was too wide, I may play with it, but for now, I’ll post it in here every now and then:

My bookclub meets tomorrow, we’ve been reading “1000 White Women,” and it’s really good, I highly suggest you check it out if you want a historical fiction/alternate history book dealing with the Cheyenne Native Americans.

In case you hadn’t heard, in Tuscon during the Super Bowl, the feed was interrupted by half a minute or so of porn.  Now, only people without digital cable saw it.  Now, the studio is offering a coupon to watch the movie for free.  Really funny, but the kicker is to watch the movie, you have to have digital cable.

The CEO of one of the major airlines in Japan broke down a wall in his office to make sure his employees would come talk to him, and he insists on only taking a $50,000 salary.  American companies could learn a lot from this man.

Note to self: learn how to grow these plants (for healthier air indoors)

FOX News turned a Press Release verbatim into a news story.  The problem (aside from the crap journalism that is FOX news and anyone for that matter that uses a Press Release verbatim) is the glaring error in said release.  See if you can find it (hint, it’s in the picture)

Black Cats will be advertising for FEAR 2 in England.  Pretty cool if you ask me, I hope we get them here as well, although I wouldn’t count on seeing any around Pittsburgh.  Also, I love the handlers for the cats, makes them look much more ferocious, and boosts their egos…which they don’t need!

OMG the galaxies are colliding!  No need to panic, we have two billion years to brace for impact.

Gizmodo has a great article about google searches, check it out!

If you’re on facebook, chances are you’ve seen and been tagged in the “25 things” meme.  Slate gathered data and found out some cool stuff about it, including that originally it was only “16 things”

Mozilla has a new web based text editor called Bespin.  I’m still trying to figure it out, but I’d like to give it a shot.

Following in the lines of the Japanese Airline CEO above, the Steelworkers Union is giving their bonuses to their unemployed members.  Great to hear this kind of news (the good part, not the fact that there are unemployed steel workers).

See those links up there, see the ones below this post?  I may not be able to link like that anymore.  At least if some corporations have their ways.  Links are what connects the web, what makes it work.  Read about the sad case and how companies are trying to stifle the web in this article.

My friend sent me this trailer for the movie 9:

That’s it for now, I ran some errands today, including finally getting my pictures from Sea Base 2002 on CD, so hopefully I’ll have them up here soon.  I’m most likely going to be changing hosts, the address will stay and same, and no one should see a difference, but I’ll be getting a ton more space for the same price.  And since I’m just about maxed out anyway, that would be a good thing so I can add more galleries.  Have a great one everybody!

Alright, two pieces of video game news.  The first, URU is now going to be released as open source software!  This means a return to The Cavern, fan-written Ages, and who knows what else.  Hopefully the guilds can keep things moving and everyone on task, and we can see where we go.  Hopefully we get some kind of guidance from Cyan, at least about Ae’gura and the City Proper.

Second, a group from the PA Legislature concluded a study (three years I believe) and basically said that the current gaming regulatsions (ESRB) are good, and no more should be enacted.  Ok parents, take some iniative, and find out what you’re buying your kids before you shell out the money, be a parent, and we’ll all be fine.  Also, good job PA!

In a previous post, I promised to talk about some of the podcasts I’ve been listening to lately, here’s what I have feeding into my iTunes (becasue for whatever reason, Windows Media Player still doesn’t support podcasts):

Distorted View Daily
IGN’s voice chat
Jim and Randy will talk to anybody – weekly rundown of the headlines at Carbolic Smoke Ball
The Onion (audio)
The Onion (video)
Pittsburgh here and now: Tech Talk (from the Post-Gazette)
President Elect Obama’s weekly radio address
President Elect Obama’s weekly youtube address
Slate explainer
Slate political gabfest
Slate culture gabfest

And the couple ‘hit or miss’ ones, where I decide each episode to download or not:
Slate’s bookclub
Slate V
Slate daily podcast

I was out at SVC’s Christmas party last night, which was awesome.  It was in the Fred Roger’s Center, which is beautiful!  Also, I know someone who helped build it, so that made it extra awesome!

That’s about it for now, I finished my Christmas shopping and now just have a few left to wrap.  Have a great one everybody!

So a new improvement is a rudamentary tagging system.  If you click on a blog entry, you’ll be taken to the page for that entry, which allows you to add comments.  Also included there are tags.  I’m trying to remember to add tags to everything I write now, so when you click on a subject you want to see more of, you’ll be taken to a search page for that term.  It’s not a perfect system, and I may be upgrading in the future, but for now, it’s there.

I’m also still working on getting my metblogs feed up and running.  For whatever reason, Joomla doesn’t like that module ever since I migrated over to 1.5.  I’ll keep playing though to see if I can get it!

The new site launches!  There are still lots of things to add and many messes to clean, but in the meantime, I hope you enjoy the new site.  The comments have been redone, so they are seamless to add, and there are now two RSS feeds (located on the left bar), one for site news, and one for my blog.  Add them to your favorite RSS reader (my.yahoo, outlook, etc) to keep up with my updates easily!

At the top, you can easily adjust the font size, and the site isn’t fixed to a certain width anymore, I think both help it out a lot.

The galleries will be the next thing brought over, and hopefully the book reviews won’t be far behind.  Down the line I’m looking for more server space, so I can increase the number of galleries and book reviews, but until then, I’ll finish cleaning up the mess and we’ll go from there!

Let me know what you think in the comments (and if you don’t want to log in each time you write one, register an account)!

The current plan right now is to update the site this weekend.  In the meantime, I’ll be doing some work behind the scenes, so please excuse the mess.

The update is a long time coming, but I wanted to do some testing.  Hopefully things go smoothly (although book reviews and photo galleries won’t be up at first), and the new site will bring new functionality, such as a dedicated RSS feed for my blog (as well as one for the frontpage items here), a better comment system, and a new, cleaner look.

More news as I progress through the update!

Hello everybody, and happy Chinese New Year!  Welcome in the year of the rat (which, incidentally, I was born in the year of the rat two cycles ago, I believe), and to celebrate, I went out and had Chinese for dinner.

The Myst community is still going strong, at this point mostly fueled by extreme cautious optimism because of a comment made my Rand about Cyan running URU servers.  Will it be Until URU or MO:UL or maybe something else entirely, who knows.  This is the first we’ve all heard of it, so I’m a bit skeptical, but still cautiously optimistic.

So tomorrow if the first Friday in Lent.  Typically, every year I forget that it’s Lent (even though we just passed Ash Wednesday) and I eat meat (even though we just passed Ash Wednesday, a day where I did not eat meat).  Will the streak hold true?  I’ll keep you posted.

So I think I’m going to head up to Chill Out on Saturday, and then a group of us is going to Phipps on the 23rd, so lots of exciting things coming up over the next few weeks.

The Format broke up, in a very strange way.  I’m still trying to figure it out actually, but through a long and drawn out post to their Live Journal, and subsequently my RSS feed, I was able to determine (fairly confidently) that they broke up.  It’s a pity too, their first CD was great, and the one time I heard their second CD I was also impressed (although I think I liked the first better).  But as always, it’s sad to see a promising indie band break up.

Otherwise, not a whole lot to report on, I’m still feeling tired from having the flu, so I haven’t been doing a whole lot, but that’s ok, I probably need to take it easy for a bit.

Alright, all kinds of updates and links for everyone today. Homecoming recap is coming soon, I promise.

I went to the zoo yesterday which was an absolute blast, I’ll have pictures (and probably a recap) up soon, so be on the lookout for that. I’ll also put up the pictures from my trip to the zoo on the mountain from over the summer.

Also, since in my head I am a world-renowned media darling, I feel that I should jump on the bandwagon and add that I too am glad that Rosie did not mention me in her book! Also, Stephen Colbert’s book came out and I want to pick it up eventually.

I’ve mentioned PostSecret here before, and there are two new developments, the first is a news story, detailing what happened when a PostSecret reader had his phone number placed (with permission) on the site, a good read, I hope you enjoy. Second, the new PostSecret fan community has opened (coinciding with the fourth book), so check it out if you are so inclined. This week’s post includes a new video, so check it out if you are so inclined.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pKZ5blYSyE

A great t-shirt for all the XBOX 360 gamers out there has popped up:

Ah, the red ring of death, how appropriate. I think that it’s appropriate that it’s become such a common feature that it’s now something we can laugh at. Good times.

The Consumerist has a great article that is a combination of previous articles they have put together, all detailing how to fight back when you receive unacceptable customer service or treatment from a company. Check it out here.

Pittsburgh is making an impression in cyberspace, and in a big way:

Google maps has been working on adding the feature to see the view from streets and has recently added Pittsburgh! When you use Google maps, any street outlined in blue can be viewed, and although it seems a bit slow and finicky at times, it’s pretty cool, check it out!

Although not new, it is gathering some attention, the Pittsburgh section of Gridskipper seems to be growing, which is nice to see, although they do tend to have a biased opinion (in a bad way) of the city, especially the airport, which was voted best in the nation, so I don’t see what their problem is. Either way though, it’s cool to see (Gridskipper is part of the Gawker network)

And to top all of that, metroblogging has added a Pittsburgh section as well. I saw metroblogging before, but didn’t give it much thought at there was no Pittsburgh section, but now it’s there! The articles (from what I’ve read so far) are well penned and it looks like it is updated more frequently than Gridskipper, so it’s also worth your time. I have both set up to feed me their headlines, so as interesting stories come about, I’ll let you know.

Getting away from Pittsburgh for a bit, someone posted pictures from a resort in California, and it looks relaxing and everything a resort should offer, I was especially enthralled by the treehouse accommodations and the sign for the Library. The insides look awesome too, simple like the microhouses that I think are so cool, yet comfortable enough to move around and maybe even have guests (or a family) over.

And finally, here’s a link to a youtube video about the second game in a bowling tournament being put on by a national chain of senior citizen communities. The teams at four locations around the country compete and the results are pulled together. The first video is a little better, but also longer, so I decided to link to this one instead. This follows on the heels of the Wiimbeldon competitions (one official and one unofficial held at a bar in Manhattan).

I’d like to put down some thoughts from the summer, a lot of things are up there in my head, so chances are I’ll forget a lot, but hopefully I’ll get most of them.

The job was a lot different than what I was used to, but I really did enjoy the work that I was doing. There were lots of times that I felt like I was easily replaceable by an answering machine (Night Service) and a copier (Konnie), but oftentimes many people didn’t realize what all I did, which was annoying and a bit degrading (especially when people kept insisting that I had an easy job), but I suppose it comes with the territory.

One of the things that worried me the most going into the summer was dealing with emergencies. I had dealt with many at Camp Freedom, but was nervous about coordinating things on the other end. But I think I did a good job with the situations that came up. One of the hardest things to do was actually carrying a Scout out on a backboard. In the moment, I was just doing what was needed, but afterwards, trying to decompress from the situation, was emotionally trying, more than I thought it would be. The Scout was fine by the way, so not to worry.

I did however, have a good book to curl up with and relax after work: Harry Potter. However, I never read on the job, as that wouldn’t have been good. I also read a bunch of other books, and I’ll be posting reviews soon, so look forward to those.

I usually would either read in my room, or would put a blanket on the hill outside my house and read. Although to make sure I wasn’t spoiled, when I was reading Harry Potter I found a nice big rock on the shore of the lake. I ended up going back there, it was very nice, it jutted out into the lake and gave me a great view of the sunset while I was reading.

The special events that I planned went well, although I wish I had had more time to work on the 100th anniversary of World Scouting, but some things are beyond my control I suppose. The block party was a big hit, and we all had a blast, hopefully it can be something that becomes an annual event.

And as much as I loved my job, there were some bad parts, mostly working with certain people. Some of my co-workers weren’t the easiest to deal with, and of course the "professional" Scouters that never showed up (or showed up once and insulted me). But that being said, it was my job to be courteous and helpful on the phone, no matter what was going on or how I was feeling, which is one of the reasons I think that I was a good office manager.

And I guess I did do a good job, the Central staff floored me by awarding me the "Most Valuable Staffer" award, and I even got an offer to be an administrative assistant to the finance department downtown, even though I only met the lady once, but I guess my reputation precedes me (Alf was also very impressed by me, he said I was "very efficient.")

Keeping quiet about everything that was going on on the reservation was sometimes tough, but I just played dumb, because I had to, and most people respected that, and I was grateful.

I do have to say though, I did find a love for oatmeal this summer, and I have lost a book somewhere between Monroeville and Farmington: it may still be packed away somewhere, but I’m not sure.

Pictures will be posted soon, I’d like to revamp the gallery software, so this would be a good time to do it, and in the meantime, we can watch the pictures on my Wii’s photo channel.

The next step now is working with the staff association. I’ll be getting together with Kevin at some point to talk about the direction we want to go with the organization.

I’m thinking about making a slight change to the format of the blog, a new way to streamline, organize and index the content. I haven’t decided if I’ll keep it yet, but I’ll be trying it out in the future. I’ll be looking for feedback, so please let me know. And in other site news, the new version of Joomla should be coming out very soon (it’s a bit behind where I thought it would be), so in the somewhat near future I’ll be upgrading the site, but I’ll be sure to let everyone know what’s going on as it happens.

Look for more regular updates soon, as well as my ‘normal’ posts, I have a lot of links from the summer to go through and a list (packed away somewhere) of items to talk about. Have a great one everyone!

Edit: I found my book!
