Couple update for you guys, let’s see what we have:

First up, did you know that Bradley Manning was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize?  Pretty awesome, especially the write up.

Also from Copyranter, the village of Hobbiton in New Zealand is no inhabited by sheep, and the “best” ad campaigns of all time.  No real way to to judge “best,” although they are all iconic and important in their own ways.

The Ottawa library system is starting a “Human library” feature, where you can interview people of interest for 20 minute blocks.  This is an awesome idea, I really need to get a passport and head to Ottawa, this is just remarkable!

CPAC is an annual conservative conference, and sadly, one of the most hate-filled events of the year.  Speaking of, this year, they invited (and later refused to renounce) a white supremacy speaker.  Maddow covers it here and Slog covers it here.  Disgusting.

I’ve been following the birth control debate, although not as close as I probably should have.  Reproductive health coverage is a part of health coverage, and I think it should be included (and maybe we’ll get some advances in men’s reproductive health while we’re at it).  It’s about setting a basic standard of health, which the government is saying employers are saying they must provide.  That being said, I was upset that he backed down from the Catholic Church, but will still get the same result anyway, by instead putting the onus on the insurance companies, not the employers.  So I guess in the end, it worked out, I Just hate setting the precedent that one religious denomination can dictate government health coverage decisions.

Ragan reports on an awesome interview given by the CEO of Morgan Stanley:

Morgan Stanley’s employees need an attitude adjustment.

At least that’s what CEO James Gorman thinks of his staff who are aren’t happy with recent 20 to 30 percent pay-cuts among senior executives. He also limited cash bonuses. In this Bloomberg Television interview, he outlined three reasons his employees shouldn’t be upset with a smaller salary.

1. They’re “naïve” and should read the newspaper.

2. Compensation shouldn’t define their overall level of happiness. If it does, “you have a problem which is much bigger than the job.”

3. Life’s too short. “If you’re really unhappy, just leave. I mean, Life’s too short.”

This man is amazing!  But is it sad that just using some common sense is now considered amazing?  Check out the article at Ragan to see the interview and read more.

Saw this a bit ago, on a fun note, I have the backpacking stove they feature in it.  Pretty awesome:

In drug-related news, Pot smokers have healthier lungs than cigarette smokers, and some people are claiming that the drug-war is killing more than alcohol or guns.  While I don’t agree with that based on the data presented, the war on drugs is still a colossal waste of time, money and resources.

He is a vile, horrible person, but I do have to give Santorum some props for selling sweater vests as a fundraiser.

Washington State is posed to have marriage equality (two votes short in their state senate), and as expected, the Catholic Church is butting into civil rights and urging citizens to oppose it.  Slog has a great rebuttal technique.

Wizards of the Coast is working on the fifth edition of Dungeons and Dragons, and it’s being partially crowd sourced, which is kind of awesome.  The New York Times writes about it here.

Couple quick items for you today, check it out:

I’ve seen this before, but never with this much of a demo.  We knew it was only a matter of time:

This is an NYT article about a cool service connecting kids to useful accurate sex ed (text messaging, of course).  However, here’s the really scary sentence:

Sex education is a thorny subject for most school systems; only 13 states specify that the medical components of the programs must be accurate.

I don’t ever know how to react to that.  Rage?  Disbelief?  Do I cry or laugh, I just freaking don’t know.

And speaking of craziness and sex, did you know that Louie Vuitton (I remember in my advertising class, being one of two guys, and we both had to ask who that was), makes condoms.  And they cost $68 each.

Banksy has done a sculpture, this time, to remember the victims of the abuse of the Catholic church.  It’s an awesome piece, entitled Cardinal Sin.

Also across the pond, the Louvre is going to be offering a program where people can use their 3DS’s to take tours.  Pretty awesome!

Remember, voting is every American’s right.  There shouldn’t be roadblocks to it (take for instance, the Iowa Republican caucuses, which have no ID requirements like those proposed around the country, although apparently in Virginia, you have to sign an oath saying you’ll vote Republican in the general election).

I’m probably going to take some heat for this, but here is an ad that was running, and then quickly pulled:

 

Copyranter picks it up as a Date Rape adSlog sees it as a alcohol ad.

Copyranter mentions how hard it is to do a good rape ad, and he’s right.  It’s a very, very tough line to walk.

Slog points out that alcohol and drinking do not magically make rapists exist.  It’s a valid point, and it makes me think that this works better as an alcohol awareness ad.

In that sense (with some changes to the the copy), I think that it is a great ad, and I would hope it would remind, not just women, that when impaired, people are prone to do things they wouldn’t otherwise, or were even coerced into.  It could be quite an awesome campaign, focused around the “couldn’t say no” theme.

Emphasis on “couldn’t.”

Contrary to the views in the links above, I don’t see this as victim-blaming.  I can see how it could be perceived as that, but I guess I’m more looking at the ad as a piece about self-control.

Even though this ad was quickly pulled, it got a lot of coverage online, so at least we can hope that brings attention to the cause.
