Today's Mighty Oak

I’m back from my summer travels, so that means, much more regular content!  Until I get back on a normal sleep schedule and whatnot, here’s a short update:

I know I missed it, but all I have to say is one of my favorite quotes, “You should live every week like it’s Shark Week.”  Enjoy:

So, a school district in Missouri banned “Slaugherhouse Five,” because it goes against the Bible.  Good gravy.  But thankfully, the Vonnegut Library will give any student from that district a free copy.  If you’d like to learn more or donate, check it out.

Here is the complete set of Arrested Development paper dolls.  I especially love the Buster one, since it includes the seal and the “You’re Killing Me, Buster” banner.

I posted this on Metblogs, but it’s too awesome to pass up again.  Just remember, this was released when we were still just over .500:

Go build a solar system!  And prepare to lose long bits of time as you play with this!

A message to everyone in London:

And finally, make sure to read this article, it’s about some kids who tried to make a newspaper the old fashioned way, and it’s awesome!

That’s it for now, but I’ll be back soon with a lot more, have a great one!

Alright everyone, I have a lot of stuff to post again, so bear with me.

First off, Dollhouse went off the air two weeks ago, I’m still sad about it, but I highly suggest you watch it on DVD (skip the first few episodes of Season 1 and start with “Man on the Street”), in case you’re wondering here’s what you missed (spoilers, obviously):

Priya’s painting from season one was auctioned off for over $6,000, all going to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.  And io9 recaps why we’ll miss Dollhouse, and it’s an excellent read.

But luckily, Lost is back.  Here’s what you missed the first five seasons:

And here are Newsweek staffers who have never seen Lost trying to explain what’s going on:

A new series of books is going to be published via Geocaching.  I saw an updated interview with the author, and he’s trying to spread them all over the globe, pretty cool, but kind of impractical.  Also, I don’t seem very interested in the books themselves.  Oh well.

Thankfully, PG+ has more than 35 members.  And by the way, it’s awesome!  I’ll be writing about it over at Metblogs pretty soon I hope.

Thanks Supreme Court:

I’m not sold on the iPad, if it was open to more than just the app store, I think I would get one, but right now, I don’t think it’s worth it.  Check out Slog’s coverage of it, icnluding this gem of a sentence:

UPDATE: Post edited and cleaned up, because I was drunk.

Pensblog has an awesome guide to hockey fans.  Check it out here.  And the game is still going on tonight but the doors open early at 6 p.m.

One of the guys I work with is the Mayor of North Irwin!  I call him Mr. Mayor now.  Apparently the city council just fights a lot, so I want to get a group from work to show up with posters and bells like at a little league game or something.  I think it would be fun.  Also, as I like to mention, he won by 23 votes: mandate of the people!

Berger and Green made it to BoingBoing!  Oh boy!  Explosion!

Betty Bowers, America’s best Christian is back, this time, she’s cooking:

Ever wonder what the 57 Heinz varieties are/were?  Check them out here.

A Dr. Pepper flash mob took over the NYSE, they were not too amused.

Words.  Can’t.  Comprehend.  Ewwww?

I can’t embed it, but here’s the link to Pink’s awesome performance at the Grammy’s.  It reminds me of her performance in Australia, pretty awesome.

Jesus gets a make over:

JESUS2000 from jesus 2000 on Vimeo.

NPR has a great article about the passage of time, and how we perceive it as we age.  Check it out.

Rob Tisinai is back, his videos are articulate, well researched, and just all around amazing:

The Don’t Ask Don’t Tell hearings continue on.  Want to see McCain absolutely owned?  Check out this link.  Not that he’ll change his stance, but it’s great to see nonetheless.  Here’s more reactions to the hearings.

This is pretty awesome, and I think Pat would really dig it:

I commented earlier about the first legal male prostitute, and how he, ahem, compared himself to Rosa Parks.  Yeah, he’s not bright at all.  Well, the New York Post partook in his services (not all of them), check it out, but be ready to laugh a lot, and barf.

And if that didn’t enrage you enough, check out these three links about the “relief work” Scientologists are doing in Haiti.  Disgusting.  Because Haiti doesn’t need food or water, no, they need machines to con them into thinking they have dead alien spirits inside them.  If you’re still looking for something to do to help, look no further than Savage Love, Facebook, and an awesome idea.

Are you going to be appearing on The Daily Show?  Read these tips first!

I talked about it over at Metblogs, but The Big Money also covers the redesign of the Heinz ketchup packet.

Have you been to SellecWaterfallSandwich?  It’s exactly what you think it is.

I like the ads, especially the first one, a lot.  However, I do have to agree, I won’t be taking marriage advise from Utah thankyouverymuch.  Also, the comments are a great read!

Want to commemorate the recent snow, get the t-shirt (I also suggest the map of Pittsburgh shirt):

That’s all I have for now, I have more, but I need to take a break, this has been a long post, but I’m almost all caught up!  Catch everyone in a little bit!

Towards the beginning of the summer, Metblogs quietly launched a new site called the Global Conspiracy, looking at citizen journalism.  I was selected to be one of the writers, representing the Northeast.  And while I certainly hope the project will live on, for now at least, it is on hiatus.  If you’re interested in reading my writing, I’ve cross-posted it here as well.

If the GC ever comes back, I’ll let everyone know (and unpublish the posts here so as not to confuse people), but in case you want to check it out, here is the link to my articles.

It’s been a crazy couple days, doing all kinds of cleaning, unpacking and even more cleaning.  I’ve also been slowly ripping a good portion of my CDs and putting the music onto my Zune.  It’s been taking longer than I thought it would, but then again, I have more music than I remember!

Check out this really cool music video, I’ve never heard of the song or the artist, but I really like the art style:

Two Weeks – Grizzly Bear from Gabe Askew on Vimeo.

I started reading the new Star Wars series, “Fate of the Jedi.”  I flew through the first one, and just picked up the second one, I think the third one comes out pretty soon, but most of the rest won’t come out until next year.  The strange thing is that all of the books are coming out in Hardcover.  For whatever reason, Star Wars books have this awful way of being published where the more important ones come out in Hardback (and then a year later in paperback), and the rest in paperback.  This was not a problem, but an annoyance, especially during The New Jedi Order since it was such a long series.

I do realize I’m a dork.  Just so you know.  But I’ll stop.  For now.

Patrick, DC Metblog’s captain, has an awesome entry on his blog about his circles of friends, and the reading of his blog.  A lot of it I think applies to my own friends as well, although I would add that I always find it strange when one of my friends talks about what I wrote.  One, because I never expect them to read my blog, and secondly, because like Patrick, I keep my blog primarily as a record for myself.  But I am thankful to my readers, I am.  I would like to find out a way to somehow automatically port comments from facebook over to my blog.  I don’t know if that is possible, but I’ll start to do some research for that.

Ok, I think that’s it for now.  I’ll be ramping up Pittsburgh Metblogs as we get ready for the G20, but until then, I’ll catch everyone later, have a great one!

Just cheking in with everyone, it’s been a while since I’ve written anything here.

The July Project over at Pittsburgh Metblogs is still going strong, so make sure to take a look if you haven’t seen it yet.  I’d also like to work on some way to better link to the blogs that I read on a consistent basis, we’ll see though.  I’ll work on that in the fall, along with getting some more galleries up (including VGL and possibly Conclave).

Things at camp are going well.  We got some rain this week, which was much needed, so that was nice.  Dan left today for Botswana, I think I convinced him (or at least helped to convince him) to start a blog while he’s over there, so that will be cool to read about his experiences.  My parents sent me an awesome package of stuff, which has been keeping me entertained.

Tuesday, Ranger Ken kidnapped me at 5:30.  He came into the office, pulled me out and then put me into his car and we went to dinner and to see Harry Potter.  He has never read the books, and made some very funny comments during the movie.  We’ve also all agreed that we won’t tell him how book 7 plays out so he has to see the movies with us when they come out.

It has been (knock on wood), a fairly quiet night, which is a nice change from this week.  I think if it stays like that I’ll head down to the dock and read for a while tonight.  That’s it for now, I’m heading across the way for dinner, catch everyone later!

Quick update for everyone.  First off, it appears as though Dollhouse is doing well, though not necessarily in its time slot (surprise, surprise!).  It’s doing really well on iTunes.  I don’t know if you have to pay for it there, but I think it’s also doing fairly well on Hulu as well (turning your brain to cottage cheese, thank you Alec Baldwin).

Looking to buy a house, check out this link first. And of course, Lifehacker is also reporting about 20-somethings and their lack of insurance, and how they cope.  Thankfully I have insurance now, it may not be great, and my doctor may not accept it, but it’s something, right?

If you haven’t logged onto Facebook, you’re not only missing “25 things” but more importantly, the rise of the corporate overlords!  That’s right, FB changed their terms of service, with barely a whisper about it, saying that all the content belonged to them forever, even if you delete it.  Then when the shit storm broke, thanks to one of my favorite sites (ex-gawker media owned) Consumerist, they quickly changed their tune, insisting that they never said they owned what you uploaded or would profit from it.  Now the terms of service are back to what they once were while FB licks their wounds.  Will I close my account?  No, am I more skeptical about it, of course.  Want some tips on how to protect your privacy on FB, check it out here.

KDKA reported about it today at lunch, and Lifehacker covered it yesterday.  Cell phone companies are doing something right for once.  All phones will now have the same charger, mini-USB.  My phone, the Chocolate 3, uses it, and it’s great.  Look for that I think by 2012.

Otherwise, I’m just trying to keep up with everything, TV shows included.  Lost tonight, I’m racing through a bunch of books trying to finish them before I start my book for the March book club meeting.  In the meantime, here’s the latest news coming out of metblogs:

That’s right, they got 3 Flip Minos.  They’ll be sending them around to help video tape events whenever a city needs them.  We’ll see how that goes!

And, for fun, here’s an awesome video that combines Queen (and Shawn of the Dead) and Super Mario Galaxy:
