Today's Mighty Oak

I spent July cleaning up my digital and physical life for a project I did for Camp NaNoWriMo.

Taking the format of NaNoWriMo, camp is more free-form, allowing you to write, edit, draw, really tackle any project you want. I set out about 40 different tasks and I completed 30 of them (and I was working on number 31 last night, but didn’t finish).

Here’s what I did:

Finished reading “Refocusing My Family”
Setup and started mental health BuJo
Updated personal ultrarunning packing list
Sorted papers on printer stand
Mango: Arabic lesson 1
Created Runnit Spotlight wiki page
Knit heart blog post
Magazines finished: 1
Cleaned up Google Keep
DnD Recap
Medical directive packet
Philly half training plan
Cleaned up mobile bookmarks
Cleaned up browser bookmarks
Clean bookshelves: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Updated videos for the Myst Linking Book
Social media pulls: Jan, Feb, March, April, May, June, July
Updated my running page
Sorted my ginormous pile of filing

The big projects I need to finish (besides the cleaning out my filing cabinet, which I got halfway through last night) is cleaning out my Gmail and updating my dating app profiles. I had also hoped to get through more magazines and cleaning some more physical spaces, but before I tackle those, I have to get the huge pile of books I’m getting rid of out of my house.

Overall it was a successful month and I’m glad I tackled what I called “Literary Miscellany.” It’s been nice to get those tasks checked off and out of my mind!

Alright, let’s see what we have today.  First up, it’s almost time for NaNoWriMo!  This will be my 13th year!

Dominic Monaghan has joined the cast of Star Wars: Episode IX!

In case you (for whatever reason) thought otherwise, the SCOTUS nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, is opposed to same-sex marriage and would certainly rule against it (if there is a conservative majority on the court, it will be back and I’ll lose my rights).

In other horrifying news, the administration has now directed federal contractors that they can discriminate against LGBT people based on ‘religious beliefs.’  Remember when I said that elections have consequences?  Yeah, this is not good.

The anti-gay baker from the Masterpiece decision is back, and now is saying he doesn’t have to serve trans customers.

2 Political Junkies covers the grand jury report about the Catholic Church:

While the Catholic Church was protecting and covering up the sex-crimes of some of its members, let’s all remember that it was also lecturing everyone else on the evils of:
Birth control
Abortion
Masturbation
Sex outside of marriage
Not being straight (i.e. being either “L” or “G” or “B” or “T” and so on)
Any number of other issues regarding “sexual morality”

The word you’re looking for is hypocrisy. Huge blatant hypocrisy.

No amount of contemporary apologies will change that.

Okay, onto some better and more beautiful news, there is a fake final image sent by the Cassini probe, which is beautiful (but fake because it wasn’t the last photo sent).  The last photo is also breathtaking:

There’s new Firefly comics coming out!  This time, a new studio, Boom!, who did the Munchkin comics, will be publishing them.

I’ll be writing at length about the MasterpieceSCOTUS decision, but of course, a member of the South Dakota GOP has said that because of that case, businesses can discriminate based on race.

Students from Majory Stoneman Douglas performed a song from RENT at the Tony’s:

New research shows that anti-gay views correlate with lower intelligence.  Of course.

The trailer for the new Matt Groening’s new show.  It’s definitely the same art style as Futurama, and I’ll give it a chance.

I’ve been a local volunteer (municipal liaison) for National Novel Writing Month for a few years now.  It’s so amazing and I love helping participants and kids (through the Young Writers Program) unlock their creative potential and write for 30 days with literary abandon.  NaNoWriMo also runs two camp sessions: participants get to choose what they work on and how they measure success.  This year, I”m jumping in with a great group with the goal to write each day.

A lot of that writing will be here, some of it will not, but getting back into that discipline is something I’d like to practice a bit, and what better way than with an amazing team of writers (all of whom identify as Slytherin but they’ve adopted this Hufflepuff to create the ‘Drunkest Slytherpuff” cabin once again)!

Today’s writing (and many of them, I do have a big backlog) is a ‘normal’ blog post for me, so here we go!

Nerdist asks if George Lucas’ idea for the sequels is what you imagined.  No.  No it is not.  But, in retrospect, it gives more credence to some of the things I hated about the prequels (and again, Star Wars is his creation, he can tell whatever story he likes, we get to choose if we like it or not.  Well…Disney does now).

An amazing parkour video for Pride month:

The next season of American Horror Story will mash up Murder House and Coven.  This is exciting!

The creator of Godwin’s Law has suspended Godwin’s Law.  That’s should tell you where we are in this country right now.

That’s it for now, I’ll be back very soon!

Hey all, quick update for everyone before I head back to my novel (left than 9K to go!)

First up, my friend Patrick put together an awesome video around DC:

Sooooooo, this is strange.  And what happens when there isn’t a separation of Church and State.  Also, it’s kind of ridiculous the CoE still won’t allow women bishops.  As we’ve said before, the penis is not a direct link to Jesus.

NPH has an awesome new show coming to Nerdist:

And if you’ve watched Crash Course World History (or even if you didn’t), here’s their second blooper reel:

That’s it for now, have a great one!

Quick update, first up, this is so awesome my face just about melted off and I want it and I’ll never ask for anything else ever again:

As many of you know, every November I write a novel as part of NaNoWriMo.  November is also Men’s Health Month, and I have a bunch of friends participating in Movember.  I applaud their efforts, not only because I can’t grow a mustache to save my life (sideburns are another story), but also because there are three freaking months of breast cancer awareness (February, May and October), so it’s nice to see that half the population gets one, little-known month.  But Tom’s made this awesome video to celebrate:

And lastly, happy Halloween from the fourth most haunted campus in the country:

Another update for everyone, hope you enjoy:

Scientist have found a spiral star.  Not a solar system or galaxy, but a star.  Really cool, check it out.

This is really cool, watch to learn how much The Internet weighs:

Want to find out how long your relationship has been in terms of the unit of measure of a Kardashian (72 days)?  Click here.  By the way, congratulations to my parents who have been married over 180 Kardashians!

Death to Pennies:

NPR has an awesome article about NaNoWriMo, by the author of The Night Circus.  Which, by the way, is an amazing books, and one of my new favorites, you really should read it!

Wes Anderson’s new movie looks really awesome, and it includes Edward Norton!  Check it out:

Death Star PR approves of this letter.  And so do I!  Which first of all, if you’re going to be a go and talk about Star Wars, you better know your stuff.

And finally, I think it will take longer for us to see these, considering that now we’ll need power running to our windows, but it would be awesome to see above sinks (for when washing dishes) as long as it includes links to online video:

Thanks again for reading, have a great one!

Once again, I’m participating in National Novel Writing Month.  Usually I put up an image that shows my current wordcount and how close I am to the goal of 50,000 words (hint: I’m usually behind).  This year, NaNoWriMo changed websites, so they don’t have that up and running quite yet.  In the meantime, if you’re wondering, you can check out my writer stats here.

Posts will be a little thin this month as I try to once again win, and I’ll be running to write-ins (already been to two as well as the kick-off party), but fear not, I’ll be back soon, I have a lot of stuff to share!

Word-count widgets are working!  Here you go:

Quick update for everyone.  First off, Randy Rainbow tries to save the Spiderman Musical:

Good news, Sir Ian McKellen will reprise his role as Gandalf in the upcoming Hobbit movies!

This might be the coolest idea for a soap dispenser ever:

I like that it not only saves you money and is better for the earth (no plastic containers for liquid soap that is mostly water anyway), the soap will throw off it’s scent into the air, doing double duty!

I think I’ve always known it, but music, does in fact, make you happy.  And now it’s been proven!

One more quick video (less than 20 seconds):

And lastly today, from NaNoWriMo’s blog, this may be the most awesome book store in the world.  Now I just need a passport and a lot of money to go to Buenos Aires:

That’s it for now, short update, but I’ll be back soon, have a great one!

NaNoWriMo begins at midnight, once again I’ll be taking 30 days to write a novel.  New this year, we’re collecting used books for charity, so if you have any gently used books, and would like to help support creative writing projects in schools, let me know.

The widget below is also over on the sidebar, so feel free to follow along as I try to reach 50,000 words.
