Today's Mighty Oak

Just a quick NaNoWriMo update for everyone.  I always post my book cover once I have it finished, so here it is:

I’m still working on the back cover, but that’s the front.  Very simple, and I think it works, since it’s a horror novel.

Also, this latest episode of NaNo Video slipped in:

The title of today’s post is not about any of my characters, but did come from a write in.  More coming soon, I have a month’s work of links and news to pass on, comment on and rant about.  But in the meantime, I’m going to bask in the glow from this image for a while longer:

I’m still working on my NaNoWriMo book (3,000 words today, hoping to do another 2,000 before the end of the day, and I’ll hopefully finish up tomorrow), but I wanted to post two quick videos for everyone’s enjoyment.

First, I haven’t seen it yet on TV, but it’s still one of my favorites, and I’m sure I’m not alone in that regard:

And secondly, what better way to celebrate the holidays than with a hair band from the early 00’s?  Thanks to my friends over at The Blog Impolitic I was introduced to this during college, and it is their annual tradition as well

Hopefully I’ll be back blogging real soon, I have a ton of stuff to put up, but until then, have a great one!

And I’m back!  Big update, and another big one coming, hopefully tomorrow.  I’ve been working hard on my NaNoWriMo novel, and the word counts are now working, you can follow my progress on the left side.  Also, Pittsburgh is in a word-war with Sacramento and Finland.  Yes, the entire country.  And we’re also battling Philly, but less officially.  Tracking for that is over there as well.  We agreed at our write-in today that we need to take down Finland.  Because it would be so satisfying to say that we won versus an entire country!  Also, we learned that they only have to write 30,000 words because of how their grammar works, sentences like we use can be said in three or four words.  Only fair, and a cool fact!

I watched live online the House pass their version of Health Care Reform.  It was exciting, I found out that most representatives don’t know when to sit down and shut up, and generally I would not like to be in either house of Congress.  I also spent a good bit of time researching on wikipedia things like Whips.  All in all, a fun evening.  While I don’t agree with the individual mandate and I think there are cuts for women’s health hidden in it (but I would have to check), generally, it’s a step in the right direction.  Heck, just getting rid of the term “pre-existing condition” would do this country a lot of good.  Well, the term, and everything associated with it, you can’t just rename it and expect it to work…you know what I mean.  Good job House!

Ok, too much talking, here’s the newest trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks:

Did you know they are working on a space elevator?  I didn’t either.

And in the UK, construction can begin on the first underground mansion, complete with water slide!

That guy in Louisiana who refused to give out marriage certificates to interracial couples finally quit.

And I think this family wins for Halloween costumes!

Speaking of, Dan Savage has a great column about Halloween costumes.  Check it out, but not while you’re at work.

Games Radar did an article about video games characters zombiefied.  I don’t like the article, I don’t think the graphics were great, however, there was one entry which made me laugh, Pac-Man:

This video has been floating around this week, I’m already a fan on Facebook.  You should be too.  You know, if you support the 11 principles and the 3 herbs and spices…and you oppose the communists who want to socialize your Nazism!

Not quite your thing?  Then check out this video mash-up:

Did you know you can grow a mustache in November in support of men’s health charities?  I didn’t know, although I’m already doing one month-long project.  Not shaving would require another commitment….wait a minute….nah

The Diocese of Fort Worth is finally going to ordain their first woman priest.  Only took them 33 years, but good for them.

And it makes me happy that wherever the Westboro Baptist Church goes, more counter-protesters go.  6-200.  Sounds about right.

Are you going to be participating in a drag race?  Not in cars, a race, in drag.  Here is what you need to know.

Ok, there is a lot more coming, but for now, that’s all.  Have a great one!

If anyone else is doing NaNoWriMo, or just wants to watch, here’s the latest vlog from them.  Also, I have that same hat and will be taking it to write-ins.  I don’t think I’ll be dancing.  Just FYI.

It’s just about that time of year again…

I’m farily certain I’m dong a horror book this time, somewhat inspired by the Abarat series.  Now I just need to figure it all out…

Homecoming this weekend, including the first annual Alumni of No Distinction Dinner.  I’ll post when I get back hopefully and in the meantime, I’m going to keep working my way through The Lost Symbol, as well as everything else I’m reading!

Alright, update for everyone.  First off, here is the trailer for Where the Wild Things Are:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NOkQ4dYVaM

Looks pretty cool, although it’s been so long since I’ve read the book that I don’t remember the plot at all.

I headed to the Pens game when they played the Kings.  We won, which was awesome, although the seat wasn’t the greatest, mostly due to the pillar in front of me.  It really wasn’t that bad though, I could see all the ice except for a little strip so I couldn’t complain.  I got to wear my Monroeville Zombies jersey, which a bunch of people recognized (I loved watching the double takes and then instant of realization).

On Friday, a bunch of us from work headed to Hofbräuhaus on the south side.  The beer was amazing (I suggust Dunkel), which they make on site.  The food was also really, really good, although I think some of it was a bit over priced.  The place was absolutly packed, which typically would turn me off, but this was just a lot of fun.  Every fifteen minutes or so, the band would lead us in a toast, and the entire place would erupt in singing, making it a half bar/half concert feel.  I do suggest checking it out, go sometime for dinner, although the wait is pretty long since it is so new.

My winning NaNoWriMo book from 2007 was just self-published (it took a while to get the free publishing worked out), and I got my copy in.  Here is the cover art that I made for it:

Speaking of NaNoWriMo, I am going to be doing their sister project, Script Frenzy.  A friend of mine is doing it and I offered to write with him during April, so I’ll be writing 100 pages during the month, this time of a Web Series.  I wanted to do something different, and I figured that this would be a good way to do it.

Yesterday, a friend of mine came in from Chicago and I headed up to Cranberry to spend the day with him.  His brother brought his PS3 and I got to play Little Big Planet, which was really, really awesome!  If you have a PS3, I highly suggest you check it out.

That’s it for now, have a great one!

Today marks the 200th birthday of Boniface Wimmer, O.S.B., and the start of a year-long celebration at St. Vincent of their founder’s bicentennial.  As I write this, I’m actually watching the Vespers service as it streams online.  Also, aside from the camera being a bit titled to the side and the audio not as loud as I would have liked, it’s pretty good.  They should stream more things online.

It also looks like the book, Boniface Wimmer: An American Abbot has a new cover:

And speaking of covers, my NaNoWriMo book from this year came in (all the winners get one free proof copy from createspace.com).  Here are the front and back covers (they aren’t centered because of the bleed area that was needed to be included, in case you were wondering:

I can happily announce that I am in fact a winner of NaNoWriMo 2008.  My winning entry is:

A new telling of “The Practical Handbook of Bee Culture, with some observations upon the segregation of the Queen” by Sherlocke Holms and “Violent Seeds: The Holloway Roberts Myst” by Jeremey Flinte With a new introduction by Jakabok Botch Gone

Yes, the title is 40 words long, but it is what it is.  It was a lot of fun, as always, and I met some really awesome people at the write in’s, which I’ll make sure I get to them again next year.  For everyone still writing, you have another day to finish, so keep going!

And in the meantime, some cool links for you to peruse:

Crane porn!  And by that, I mean the phrase used by Gizmodo is ‘crane porn.’  There is this giant crane in england that floats, it is amazing!  Check it out!

Doctors will soon use lightsabers to fight cancer.  Not in a duel to the death, or like on Family Guy when Luke Skywalker used a lightsaber to perform eye surgery, but concentrated light blades to cut out individual cells.

Ever want to use a bath bomb but didn’t want to spend the 10 bucks for it?  Make it yourself!

Ok, that’s it for now.  More updates coming now that I have some time, including more galleries!
