Today's Mighty Oak

Quick update for everyone, lots of videos this time around too:

First up, 10 misconceptions:

Awesome new shirt from Pittsburgh tees.  Check it out.

This is pretty awesome, there are giant roots installed at historic sites in Mexico as a giant art project.  Pretty cool.

Awesome cover of Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain, and I think I may like this better than the original:

An insulting law (the same type was ruled unconstitutional by the courts in Florida) was taken back, after another lawmaker decided to make it more fair.  The law would require anyone applying for public assistance submit to a drug test, and the other lawmaker added a provision making lawmakers submit to the same test.  Florida struck it down, since it violates the idea of  unlawful search and seizure, but before that happened, through the testing, it was learned that only 2% of those applying for aid in Florida were drug users, compared to 10% of the general Florida population.

Star Wars Uncut was finally released!  People from around the world were asked to submit 15 second clips, and the whole movie was pieced together:

And finally, check out this awesome experiment used with Google image search.

I’ll be back soon with more, have a great one!

Update for everyone, here we go:

First up, the new video from the British Heart Association:

Copyranter covers a Big F’in sale in Japan.  Really.

Possibly the most inane correction ever:

Joho covers the reaction to “Free Hugs.”  There are two, but the image posted is just awesome.

This video has been making it’s rounds, check it out:

Copyranter showcases this shower curtain.  I kind of like it, but could never see anyone actually paying money for it:

Unplggd takes a look at various types of light bulbs and their energy consumption.

And I Heart Pittsburgh finds this amazing cut map on Etsy:

That’s it for now, back soon with more!

Quick update, with a lot of pictures.  First up, happy fall:

This is what some people think the Occupy Pittsburgh protesters should be working towards.  And I don’t disagree:

It’s okay to laugh at this, it’s funny.  Honest.

And finally, I’m going to go ahead and say that Bachmann looks like Grand Admiral/Chief of State/Deposed Chief of State Daala.  Yes, from Star Wars.  I’m a nerd, and the comparisons are strikingly similar.  Except for the fact that Daala is a genius, and Bachmann is, well, not even close:

Okay, one more thing, watch this.  And be confused.  Oh, Shatner:

Hey everybody, quick update.  I thought I had some more links with me, but I guess they are still floating out in the tubes somewhere.  I’ll also have a few things for The Great and Secret Show that I’ll be posting in a little bit, so be sure to look for that.

First up, a federal judge has declared DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) unconstitutional on two grounds.  This was unexpected, but welcomed.  However, I have a sneaking suspicion it won’t stay.  But it’s interesting to watch, especially as the Perry trial is awaiting their verdict as well.  Also fun is that one idea was looking at it from the fifth amendment (I think) which guarantees equal protections, the other, the tenth, which gives states their rights (and is a favorite of social conservatives as well).  Exciting (and confusing legalese)!

The Stranger also came out with a great “New Column” which I’ll post:

Ok, one more piece from The Stranger, this time, in the form of a follow up letter about an internship:

Hey Lindy! I sent an email a while back to the old address of yours I have saved in my account. Since I hadn’t gotten anything back, I figured that either you took that account out of commission OR YOU ARE A BAD PERSON. To account for both options, I wrote a few responses in a “choose your own adventure” style of correspondence.

If your account is inactive/my e-mail exploded, go to page 1.
If you ignored/fiendishly deleted the e-mail, go to page 2.
To run down the cave on the left, go to page 73.

Read the rest of it here

I was tipped off about this post by PG+, but check out this awesome writing about Pittsburgh Poetry (and other local dialects).

Looking to kill some time?  This game is a lot of fun and slightly addicting.

And finally, do you happen to remember how I posted that awesome ad from Nike to start off the World Cup?  Well, maybe it’s cursed!  Slate examines it here in a follow up.

That’s it for now, but I’ll be back in a short while with some more, have a great one!

Alright, here we go again, except now instead of Uganda, it’s also Rwanda.

My mind exploded a little bit when I saw this:

As always, xkcd is awesome, and now I’m going to have to go bang my head against a wall.

Um, this is awesome:

I always forget that the cookie table is a Pittsburgh thing.  The NY Times covered it, check out the article here.

Also, I first heard that they were making a Robin Hood movie a few days ago.  And here’s the trailer, I feel as though more things should be turned around that quickly (at least in my head):
