Today's Mighty Oak

Note: Yesterday I wrote up a recap for one of my DnD games, so while I wrote, it’s not here on the blog, I’m still on track to write everyday in July!

Today marks what would have been Nelson Mandel’a 100th birthday.Ā  I remember where I was on the day he died: I was on a treadmill at the Penn Hills Y watching the news coverage, saddened and tearing up.

His story shows both some of the worst and best that humanity is capable of, and I think that’s why I’m drawn to it so much.Ā  I’ve listened to Archbishop Tutu speak of his close friend, and read many of his speeches, but what I know Mandela barely scratches the surface of what he did and who he was.

Still though, his dedication to democracy, and his example of the spirit of reconciliation are admirable and at least in myself, I feel unattainable.Ā  But much like other shining examples, I hope I can strive to be the man he knew that I was.

On the news of his death, President Obama said this:

The day he was released from prison gave me sense of what human beings can do when they’re guided by their hopes and not by their fears.

And maybe it was because 2013 was such a different time, but I can remember how much his death affected me that day and those following.Ā  Mandela’s work continues on through his foundation and The Elders, and I hope that we can all continue to live up to his giant legacy.

A short one today, dare I say that I’m just about caught up (on one source of blogging)!

First up, some karma: three lions killed rhino poachers.

New York has unveiled the first of a series of LGBT monumentsĀ that will be going up around the city.Ā  I’m hoping to see some of them when I’m there in December if I have time!

Currently the only gay male athlete in the five major sports, Collin Martin, got a standing ovation for his entrance into his first game since coming out publicly.

And finally, this amazing quote from one of the survivors of the shooting at the Capital Gazette:

I donā€™t know what I want right now but Iā€™m gonna need more than a couple days of news coverage and thoughts and prayers. Thanks for your prayers but I couldnā€™t give a f*ck about them if thereā€™s nothing else,ā€ she told the unfazed CNN host.

Another NaNoWriMo is in the books (ha) and I’m catching up with everything, so this is a long postĀ  Here’s what we have today.Ā  First up, a friendly reminder:

A reminder, ‘ex-gay’ isn’t a thing.Ā  You can’t pray away the gay.Ā  Although this man thinks he did.

A South African judge won’t let a gay couple adopt since they aren’t out, it would be damaging to the child.

Just to put in perspective how insane and bad things are, the President’s World AIDS Day proclamation didn’t mention gay peopleĀ  Let that sink in.

An amazing comic from Surviving The World about the holiday wars.

And of course:

Sarah Silverman has a great response to the many, many famous men being outed as sexual predators.Ā  Give it a read.

In a big step in the right direction, a judge has paved the way for sexual orientation to (finally) be a protected class in Pennsylvania.Ā  For over a decade, legislation hasn’t been able to make it through Harrisburg, so this would be a really good step forward.

Painting restoration is amazing to watch!Ā  It’s pretty much like magic!

Steve Grand has a new music video.Ā  It’s a good song, the video is a bit forgettable:

Pinky and the Brain meets “Silence of the Lambs” is hysterical.

Men with muscles and money are more attractive.Ā  A study was done about this.Ā  That study was a waste of money.

Very important news!Ā  Disney’s Star Tours will stop mixing eras up during the program.Ā  A wrong has finally been righted!

Speaking of Star Wars, here’s a recap:

The trailer for season 3 of The Magicians has me very excited!

Now you can make the English Triffle from Friends that doesn’t taste disgusting.

Have you set up your gaytivity scene yet?

In case you forgot, OK Go is amazing:

This year, the GayVN awards (for porn, apparently) have put all non-white actors into an ‘ethnic’ category (and keeping them out of other categories).Ā  And thankfully, some actors are speaking out and taking them to task for it.

A second actor speaks up here.

Just in case you’re one of the few who haven’t seen it, the new Avenger’s trailer:

For all your mass shooting ‘thoughts and prayers’ needs, just fill in the blanks.

Justin Trudeau gave an amazing speech apologizing to the Canadian queer community for how they were treated in the past by the government.

And finally, the Supreme Court will hear a huge case about business’ right to discriminate.Ā  I’m really nervous about it, but hoping Kennedy pulls out a win:

Have a great one!
