Today's Mighty Oak

Quick update.  First up:

Um, okay.  I guess (but where do Kosher laws stand on Android, Blackberry and Windows phones):

I think I’ve posted this before, but an awesome squirrel feeder:

Alright, let’s see what we have today.  First up, check out Mars in 3-D (if you have the glasses)!

Amazing images of the crumbling mansions of drug lords:

This Advertising Life has a great post, that makes me laugh, every time I see it.

BuzzFeed shows you how to say goodbye to your coworkers.  By the way, I did not do this.

Awesome new iPhone app, it turns your phone into a light to make it safer to bike at night:

This is cool, a wall of animated blocks.

A fun concept mirror for graphic designers:

The Walkabout looks at the 6% experiment, pretty cool to read about.

If you read nothing else political today, read this very short story.  And learn who the real job creators are, and how to distract from that fact.

That’s it for now, but I’ll be back soon!

Hey everybody, couple big updates on the way, starting with this one.  I’m going through a whole bunch of stuff, so some will be a bit old, but all still really cool!  Hope you enjoy!

Did you know that you can use bacon to track the economy?  Yeah, we might use bacon for too much at this point.

Are you concerned about genetically modified food?  You shouldn’t be, we have blenders that will hep us test them!  Slate explains.

Oh my god.  Double windmill.  What does it mean?

Sorry, had to be posted.

Want to make your own laundry detergent really cheap?  Here’s a recipe.  I’ve heard good things about this, but have yet to try it.

I’ve always says that the internet can (and usually is) a force for good.  And 4chan proves me right once again:

This is old news, but good nonetheless, now it’s legal to “jailbreak” your phone.  You know, the one that you own!

Once tablets get more and more popular, we’ll see this more often, which I’m sure would make it easier to keep menus updated, as well as save a lot of paper:

Need a primer on the whole Glen Beck is trying to swindle his viewers out of money out of greed and stupidity?  Check it out here.

Pittsburgh City Paper has a cool list of historic dates at the Civic Arena.  Check it out here.  And follow it up by a collection of stories from the Igloo, all very touching.  And they round out the hat trick with another nice piece, this one the history of the building from the start.

I have not watched all of this yet, but it’s the history of the Soviet Union, as told through Tetris:

I think I might have posted about this before, but I would change the title to “Going to Church: You’re doin’ it right

I haven’t talked much about the mosque controversy in NYC, but I’ll chime in with these comments.  That is all.

Want to get away?  Teleport somewhere using Google Maps!  Pretty cool!

Check these out, there are ten total, and I like this one a lot:

You want to see Star Wars as a silent movie?  Okay, here you go:

Anne Rice isn’t a Christian anymore!  I guess I would care if I ever read any of her stuff.  But her reasoning is sound I suppose, but I would always say find a church that fits you.  They’re out there.

I finally got the tote bag I was waiting for (I saw them, but they weren’t for sale yet), and it is a Leave No Trace bag (how fitting).  Here’s a fun mockumentary about why plastic bags aren’t exactly great for us:

This police log is pretty awesome:

Overdressed for the occasion, a man who not only lacked the mandatory skanky hoodie but was all spiffed up in a white dress shirt and slacks made an extremely literal beer run at an Alliance Road stop ’n’ rob. That is, he snabbed an 18-pack of The King of Bland Beers and scurried out the door.

But then we find that sometimes they are written as limericks!

A car parked ’twixt striping of blue
Had nothing whatever to do
With handicapped access
Cops thought what it lacks is
A ticket, and also a clue.

That’s it for now, but I’ll try to be back later in the week with some more.  Have a great one!

I have a very full back log of links and other assorted things to pass on.  I’m going to try to get to posting some of them over the next couple weeks, so this is a clearinghouse of sorts.  These are fairly current too, so you’re in luck!

The apps available for cell phones are getting kind of amazing!  You can order pizza and have ti delivered to your blanket…in Central Park.

And speaking of iPhones, here’s a fun parody:

A follow up to the periodic table of meat I posted a bit ago, here is the periodic table of swearing (which, incidentally, will probably offend you):

I stumbled across “Continuity” a game from the Independent Games Festival, and it’s a lot of fun, check it out here.

So my birthday is coming up, here’s a gift idea for you:

Probably not that safe, but still freaking cute!

World War Z is being made into a movie, and Brad Pitt is going to be in it!  I think I’m most excited that it will be a movie, though.  If you haven’t read it, it really is an amazing piece of work, even if you don’t like zombies, the writing is simply amazing!

Also in awesome writing, check out this article from Nerve about hitting on your waiter/customer.  It’s a really fun read, check it out.

And for fun, check this mash up out:

For some strange reason, I feel as if my cousin would love this product.  However, I don’t know how one tactfully asks a relative their bra size in order to purchase a Christmas gift.  I feel as though that is a sentence most people don’t ever write or say out loud.

He’s just asking, did Glenn Beck steal his credit card information and sell it to the Russians?  All signs point to yes.

So, Mel Gibson.  I feel as though I don’t need to say much more besides that.  I’ll add two things.  One, adorable kittens (and here’s my favorite)!

Make sure to check out the link to see the other 19 worst rants by Mel (as presented by adorable kittens).  Also, did you know he’s dating a man:

That’s it for now, catch everyone later!

Just in case you forgot, tonight is the season finale of Glee!  And now, Jane Lynch takes on the iPhone 4:

You’re welcome.

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day everybody!  And since he was a proponent of civil rights, I’ll start with a link from the LA Times about the Prop 8 trial:

Many opponents of same-sex marriage argue that it violates God’s will. Maybe theirs. My God doesn’t fret about homosexuality. And I figure if gays and lesbians can gain some comfort and happiness from formal marriage, then let them. Congratulations and good luck.

Andrew Sullivan jumps in with statistics about divorce, and, brilliant as always, the Onion jumps into the fray as well.

I think Parkour is really graceful and beautiful to watch, this video puts it in flip book form, which just blow my mind:

parkour motion reel from saggyarmpit on Vimeo.

Nevada just registered the first male prostitute after a change in the laws allowed it to happen.  Although, after reading the interview, he’s either stretching (he compared himself to Rosa Parks, yes, really) or just really dumb.  I can’t quite figure it out.  I started the link on the second page of the interview, which is where it starts to really get weird.

Here’s a cool spoof ad (complete with lots of swearing, so NSFW).  Although I really shoudln’t talk, if the iPhone was on Verizon, I’d get one (mostly for the ability to play Myst):

Slate takes a look at the new Domino’s ad, which I happen to like, probably a little bit more than Slate does.  Check it out here.

I’m a bit behind posting this, but if you haven’t seen it, enjoy:

It’s a little old news, but I didn’t post about it, and it still blow my mind, Slog put together a comprehensive list of the past administration (and Gulliani) trying to deny that 9/11 happened on their watch.  My brain huts a lot when I try to comprehend this kind of logic.

Here’s a cool video about the power of images (and graphic designers).  It reminds me a lot of the theory we discussed in my communication classes, if you’re interested in seeing more, check out InformationisBeautiful.net

Speaking of technology and how it changes us, Patrick has a great article about how technology can bring strangers together.  A frightening situation, but an awesome use of the web.  Also, I may have linked to this one already, I can’t remember.

Here’s a new site I found, all about fonts.  I’m geeking out a little bit.

Alright, I think that’s it for now, have a great one!
